dana 24 divorced t case???
i have 2 t cases that im trying to find out what they are out of. they both are divorced and both say dana corperation model 24 on the id plates on them. i was told they come out of an early bronco(66-77) but i researched the bronco forum and the 66-77 broncos all came with dana 20 t cases. so i really dont know what these t cases are out of. does any one know what they come in? i wonder if they are a good t case? i was curious to know if they could hold up to moderate 4x4 off road use in a 1/2 ton truck, with up to 300 horsepower .the truck weight is around 4000 lbs.
suprised nobody has jumped on this.
Here you go.
Dana 24:
'Divorced' part-time 2-speed (hi-lo), used on '59-'72 F250-F350s 4x4s and were also pretty common in the '59-'66 F100s. They were also used in 6-cylinder '73-'75 F100/F150 trucks. Cast iron, gear drive, 1.86:1 low ratio. It's a tough case but lacks a low range, and parts are getting hard to find for this.
NP205 is a better candidate, but the Dana is pretty tough.

thanks 75 f350, i was told this case was too light to be used in a 3/4 ton 4x4. i was going to put in a trail buggy hy-brid bronco. the frame is 1/2 ton but the diffs are 3/4 ton dana 44 front and a dana 60 rear, both spooled with 4.88 gears and 36 inch tires. the engine is a 302 and a np 435 4speed. its around a 300 hp combo max,so its pretty tame. at the very most it will weigh around 3500-4000 lbs fully loaded. it won,t be a bogger, just a trail blazer. what do you think? will it hold up under mild to moderate conditions? this will be our first real trail project.your opinion is greatly valued.
Wrong. It is every bit as strong as the famous np-205. Ford used them in their 3/4 ton pickups out of the factory. The big difference is the straight cut gears which means they are louder.
thanks, good to know. i have 2 of these laying around,so im thinking of trying one for this buggy build. if it breaks, i will try the other 24. if that one gernades i will use my spare 205. i would preffer to use these model24's because they were free. the 205 i rebuilt after i bought it,so i was hoping to save it for my dually 4x4. it is a direct bolt in swap for that truck. the trail buggy will be made to fit as the project goes on. right now im not even sure how long the buggy will be lol. so im going to be fabbing a few things alone the way.
Glad to help. It seems that the most people on these internet boards are younger and since the Dana 24 was used in the Ford late sixties early seventies 3/4 ton 4x4s people are not as familiar with them. Meaning that they will also say a 205 is stronger just because it is better known, even though that is not true.
Use your Dana 24s and do not worry about it. Like I said other than being noiser they are great transfer cases.
