Just bought the Goodyear 49219 tensioner to use on my 95. Thought i'd pass along a few things.
It's quite a bit longer than the OEM unit. But once installed it does fit up the belt just fine. But there's one problem. In mounting the belt, i noticed the belt hits the bolt head that mounts the tensioner. It's the original bolt that uses the T-50 torx bit, and is cylindrical shape. If started, it would shred the belt in very short order.
I abandoned it for tonight, as it was starting to rain. I think i might be able to use a regular style bolt, and the shorter head might have enough clearance for the belt. Otherwise i'll be hunting around for a superduty tensioner, and longer belt.
BTW - my 96 had the upgrade done on it before i bought it, so those pictures are all too familiar.
Will update once i find a solution, or if i abandon this tensioner.
Well, just did a 900 mile trip and got home and heard the same idle skip missunderstood was talking about, found the pulley under the tensioner unit was locking up! Was a chore getting it out with a #50 torq, soon as I got it loose there were bearing every where, cage was totally gone, thank god it held together till I hit the driveway!! NAPA had a replacement for $27, lil blue loc tite and Big Blues running down the road!!
,I did the upgrade also, but you can buy the bearing only from a bearing store. I carry a spare bearing in the glove box, if I remember all three bearings are the same. I have been one of the lucking ones that the bearing went out a long distance from home.
Well, i figured it out in the light of day. Let that be a lesson, don't try to rush a fix under approaching rain and darkness.
It was only a matter of removing the flat washer from the original bolt. There is a recess for the bolt to set into the new tensioner. Will post a photo for future reference, when i get them downloaded.
I hear you guys about dried out bearings. I keep one or two new pulley bearings in each of my trucks, and inspect them at least yearly. I had one similar to Slick, basically ready to fly apart, and did just that when i took the pulley off.
A comparison of the Original tensioner, and the replacement Goodyear 49219.
Here's how i had installed it initially. Washer prevented the bolt from setting into the recess. If i'd looked closer before trying to install i probably would have figured it out last night.
Installed on the engine. You can see here how the bolt head recesses into the tensioner mount.
