It's worth looking to the upgrade tensioner if you're replacing it. The original owner of my truck did it so I don't know how involved it is but I do know it helps with keeping the belt running tight.
i have idea...as near as i can tell no one really took super awesome care of her in the past, so i'm guessin it's old

seems like one of those tensioner pulleys (on the motorcraft site) is for an 8 groove belt that is used on the econoline vans.

I think you can just bolt the newer one in and put a longer belt on it. Someone who has done it would have to verify that though.

There are several advantages. The tension range is greater since it wraps the belt around two moving pulleys instead of one. There isn't a out of balance force that causes the tensioner to bend. This reduces the chance of the tensioner running out of true. The chances of breaking a tensioner bolt is less.

Here's the SD dual pulley tensioner:

And here's a lousy picture of it mounted:

Here's the TSB that shows how to modify the alternator bracket to make it fit:

Well I have to say that my stock tensioner puller has a short arm and the new one has a larger arm, both with only one pulley, and the original belt was very tight to get in, but it does, I better bougth a larger one (about 2" IIRC) and fitted very well. I dont know if that can be considered like an upgrade

Same here. My 97 has a longer arm on the replacement tensioner. I've replaced one of the idler pulleys, but the other one I couldn't get loose. Is it possible that one of them has left handed threads?

Till I know the only with left handed threads is the pulley of the tensioner.

Looks like I have the "superdoody" upgrade. No wonder the belt was a PITA to install. I didn't know there were two different sizes. I'll hafta remember to ask for two "large" belts when I get ready to replace this one. Gotta have a spare of the right size.
