Anyone point me toward a way to deter wasps from building nests in my door? I commute to work on my motorcycle/s so I rarely use the pickup anymore - what that means is when I do need the truck I get a load of wasps. It's no big thing really, wasps aren't really aggressive anyway but it's certainly a distraction to imagine where they might be while driving.
So far I have two colonies on the driver side door, and I would imagine another few on the passenger side door. Remove them and tommorrow another few will show up.
I don't want to have to duct tape my door shut - talk about inconvienent and talk about messing up the paint.
Anyone else have hair-raising tales of wasps, hornets, bees, or other nasties nesting in the truck?
I really like crc. electromotive cleaner they sniff that stuff and fall to the ground and die. and it dosn't hurt paint or rubber etc. I spray around my pump panels and electrical panels. seems to repel for days and that is outside, mice and other bugs don't like it either I think it burns their skin. Those dang things are nuisance around here all year.
Don't know what kind you have. Around here, I think that they call them paper wasps and they will come after you from time to time. Some were in the lower part of my mailbox -- mailman was none too happy!
I get wasp and flying insect spray and nail their nests as well as any that are flying around at the time -- kills them dead in mid air. Has a good range too.
They also drink beer! Had a kegger in the fall one year. They started dropping into the various spills. They can be mean drunks too
We got the paper wasp types, generally pretty docile..............until you mess with the nest!.....They then form into attack squadrons, and pursue until target is driven inside house with several large welts on arms and back.
I have had them try to build nests under the rails in the bed of my truck and I just take a second and spray em' with the hose and pull the little nest out. Eventually they will give up. If not then just keep spraying them. Probably the easiest way without getting the raid smell and/or tape on the paint.
I've found that if you spray some wasp killer in the door before they start a new nest, enough of the odor sticks around that they won't come back. Give it an extra squirt every month or so...
And, being perfectly honest and serious, bait the wasp trap with beer. They love the stuff. We used to buy wasp traps from the store that had a tray in the bottom where you could pour something in to attract them. It was my grandmother that told to use beer and it works great.
How about something too obvious..........throwing a canvas tarp over the truck. They might move to the bumpers or fenders but they don't like really dark places and they need a direct access (flyway) point. A tarp "covers" most of those conditions.

Seriously this hadn't occurred to me at all. In fact, Shorebird's comment's aside (which are valid), this seems like the best solution for my situation.
Up until a couple years ago I probably ran about 15,000 miles a year on the truck - now it'd be lucky to see 1,000. Sorry Ford, but my KLR is just too much dang fun. So yes getting a cover is probably the best solution here.
So now that I'm pointed in the right direction - who sells a good cover for a 2000 Ranger extended cab with a 7' bed?
I agree with spraying the varmints! I have a metal shed where they love to build nests(paper wasps) and after a few hits, they get the message. Plus I think that it gets so hot in that shed in the summer that they can't handle the heat.
I have been stung in the past for no reason I guess than one being pissed off and I happened to be an easy target.
