Eight hours. That is how long it took us to change the oil seal and bearing on the aircraft crane on the Hornet last week. A 2 ft. diameter gear had to come off to get the seal after we took off the chewed to pieces 5" bearing none of which had been touched since 1943. When the 50 ton press wouldn't do the trick a call went out for help. Caterpillar sent a guy pro bono with the new bearing, seal and 100 ton press to get the gear off. With 6 guys working the housing was cleaned, 1 1/4" bolts and nuts chased, oil cleaned off floor and then reassembled by the end of the day. I think I'd rather do that again the take off rusted exhaust manifold bolts any day.
