And i am kicking myself now for installing headers on my 66, i can only imagine what a pain this is going to be. yesterday i had to push start it, had to drive a dodge today Man i hope the flywheel is not torn up. i have been using it for the last 7 weeks everyday for work.... 3000 miles and no problems till now
You have to love the headers the wrap around the starter on the good ole "FE" engine.
Even with standard manifolds, I hate taking that top third bolt out as it seems it requires a wrench the entire way out 1/8 of a turn at a time. All other Ford engines for years had only two bolts, so why couldn't they apply that to the "FE"? I guess everything else on that engine is different so the starter might as well be too.
Bill, Getting a NAPA reman starter along with a starter wrap has added time for mine. I had one Advance starter that didn't last 50 starts before it croaked. It made a header hater out of me.
There has to be a better way. One would thing someone would come up with a shorty design like the 5.0s for truck use.
After removing the inspection cover and finding the flywheel all chewed up i had to change gears.... pulled the truck up by the shop and have it on jackstands, will take my time and replace everything needed to make it right, after all i plan to use it as my daily driver for at least the next two years. or untill i get the 65 back on the road. untill then i'll be driving the dodge dakota
Thanks Garbz for pointing me in the right direction on a new flywheel
Checker auto==== 59.00 bucks with a core,
I kinda got bummed out about all the work ahead of me. + i'm real good at putting things off i dont want to do.
Any Time Bill, Was great seeing the hacienda yesterday and the Steak Fingers at the Wishbone.
Stopped in Pichaco on the way back and walked a local non public yard, found a custom cab 67 in there with some really rare options. Made an offer on it we shall see. Also a bunch of original ford under dash AC units for bumps. Not much 61 of 66 stuff. and one really Cool 62 Dart coupe that is all there and complete, It is so ugly it calls to you...... Can you say HEMI And a TKO! A 63 Corvair With a nice body, Opels, A 61 rambler, and a 70 El Camino with huge potential.
Update: got the truck back up and running this morning, after replacing the flywheel, clutch and clutch plate, pilot bearing, throwout bearing, The real kicker was having to replace the new starter with a new starter, the first one was bad.... now i have a leak at the header gasket, and a fuel leak at the filter.
back to the auto parts store.
all and all it feels good to get it running again.

I hope it goes well.
Hey Bill W. I hears ya, have the Hooker long tubes and found with a little manuvering the starting came right out. Made couple welding repairs to headers last weekend and had to lift the engine to get the damn things out. I am kicking my backside for reinstalling them, what a major pain!!. Too much invested in the exhaust sys. at this point but if the project comes up again those puppies are coming out.
After several Rr-rr-rr slow starts, and fully charging my battery I came to the depressing revelation that the starter needs to be replaced. I thought I would try to sneak it past the headers, but it appears there is no way.
I have some thoroughly rusted on headers and have never taken them off before. Is this a job best left to a mechanic or will some pentrating oil and a deep socket do the trick? Happy to pay for an hour of labor to avoid the busted knuckles.
If you are just replacing the starter expect at least 6-8 hours to do the work. Soak the header bolts really well with wd40 or something like it, I had to jack up the engine just to get the header out, Don't give up! you can do it!. It's just nuts and bolts!
