power steering flush question??

i flush mine the other day. how fast should the fluid come out? mine did not move fast at all. does this mean i will be buying a power steering pump soon. is it safe to use additives in the fluid, like lucas?

Did you follow the suggested flushing per: ? Power Steering Fluid Flushing Procedure For F250 Superduty Truck

If everything seems normal after your flush, then you should be OK.. Do you have a whine ? (air in the system)

When I did mine it took longer then I thought it would. Pumping the brakes uses more fluid then turning the wheel from lock to lock. I wouldn't use an additive. A good synthetic Mercon V compatible is all you should need. Regular Mercon would be good but near impossible to find these days.

yep did it just like this link said. i just took a long time. and the fluid never came out very fast. mercon V is syn fluid right? it did not seem to help the problem i was having. i had a wine when turning. but not all the time.

A lot of our trucks have a slight whine (mine does and it has been flushed) that does not lead to any real problem. And like Clint said there may be some air in the system.

Edit: How old is the serpentine belt?

No .. Mercon is not syn fluid.. A lot of us use Mobil 1 syn trans fluid is labled on the bottle as Dexron/ Mercon V.. Suggest re flushing with Mobil 1 to help your whine.. Auto Zone carries it.. If you you re flush, suggest jacking up the front end so you can easily move the steering wheel back and forth while you are pumping the brakes.. you need a buddy to help you this while you are dumping the fluid into the reservoir ..

EXCELLENT advice, and you do need to pump the brakes. Otherwise, the fluid just oozes out. Pump the brakes and it pushes out nicely.

I think I'll do this for the heck of it today, because I'm bored. In the link the guy installed a filter, are very many people running a filter like that?
