I know some have done it with turbo on but after having done it with turbo off I can't imagine doing it with it on, especially if you are working alone. Of course when I did it I was putting in a new turbo so it was off anyway.
FYI: WalMart has a little gadget that costs about $5 that you plug into the lighter socket that keeps your presets all working while the battery is disconnected, it uses a 9v battery I think-they are in the auto section near the battery terminals.

Fellas, A quick safety tip. Those "keep memory alive" thingys will also keep airbags alive. As will anything that has a battery that is plugged into a power outlet. i.e. cell phone, portable DVD players etc. It gets talked about many many times in my trade magazines. ( I am a firefighter) So if your doing anything around the airbags/sensors that could possible set them off, You want the battery disconnected and wait a couple of minutes before working. I know that some vehicles, the capacitors hold a charge for a long time (up to an hour I have been told) and as little time as 5 min. Unfortunatley for us, there is no standard, and we dont always know or have to time to wait before doing what we need to.
Sorry, dont want to sound like a mother hen here, but I would hate to see someone get hurt all for the sake of not having to redo the presets on their radio.
I saw a thread somewhere about what happens when an airbag goes off when your just sitting in the seat. If I can find it, I will post it.
The thing that I wanted to point out in these pictures is if you look closely at them, you will notice that the flange for the passenger side pipe is still bolted to the Y collector. The donut was so gone on that side that the pipe slid right out. No pulling or straining. In the top picture you can see soot all around the flange as well as down the pipe.
