what is the difference between a dual stabilizer that is mounted on top of each other vs side by side? and do they make one for the 87-96 that is side by side cus i can only find it mounted one on top of the other
Assuming you have it set up right, no difference between the two as far as effectiveness, ceteris paribus.
However, if you have shocks that have a different valve rate for compression versus extension, then theoretically you should mount them opposing each other so that while one is in compression the other is in extension.
If you are buying a kit, this won't be an issue. Kits should come with directionally ambiguous valving.
Also, when you have the stacked design you are mounting the shocks both to a single point on the axle and a single point on the tie rod/knuckle/draglink/whatever. This is more likely to fail than if you were to mount the shocks horizontally & independent of each other due to the increased amount of stress placed on those two shared mounts, versus the four unshared mounts on the horizontal (side-by-side) design.
If properly mounted though, failure of the mount(s) is very unlikely.
