help!! update!!
truck is now all apart in the front end. mechanic says cam phazer or both are faulty which caused the timing to be off enough where the right bank didnt fire. wow! that is unbelievable. total parts needed are both phazers tensioners and gaskets. he says all else looks good. a little nervous at the moment, just cant believe this could cause that much problem. the chain didnt even jump, just the faulty phazer. also anybody have an idea where to get the cheapest parts. thanks

update!!!

sorry about that,
very complicated situation... as you know ford dealership diagnosed it as phazer problem. after new phazers $1200 job(which was cheap) , got it back together to tell me, its still doing the same thing. I about passed out. I was furious. I called and reamed out the service manager. sound unreasonable? what I didnt know was after I pd the $85 to have them diagnose and pull the codes, they neglected to tell me the codes. so, the problem ended up being the actual cam phazer sensors instead of the phazers themselves. $120 in parts instead of $700 the only light I could see in doing the complete job was that some of the 04 & 05 truckes had phazer problems so at least I didnt have to worry about that now. also the ford mechanic that did the job , redid the job and put the new sensors in and charged no additional labor. he blamed himself some for not pulling codes himself and relying on the report from the ford dealership. I was grateful for that. also ford said they are giving me a credit for work I do there in the future for $400. (yet to be seen) let me know if any more questions thanks

I'm glad you got it running again - sorry to hear you had a bad experience with the dealer. At least they came to the plate and have tried to make it right by you.

Did you mean cam sensors rather than cam phaser sensors. The cam sensor monitors the camshaft which the phaser is attached to. For $120 in parts, did they replace both cam sensors (bank1 and bank 2)? I thought the dealer quoted me a price of around $50 per cam sensor when I called them.

hi again
no, they were definately listed as solenoids. I believe cam phazer solenoids. anyway the part# was 3L3Z6M280EA and I was mistaken on the price, they listed for $118 ea and the dealer sold me them at cost for $70 ea hope that clears things up

OK - they replaced the variable cam timing (VCT) or variable valve timing (VVT) oil control solenoids! The name changes depending on who you talk to. Even Ford mechanics don't call it the same thing . . . . It does list for $118 - I am going to pick one up today to see if that cures my problem.

I also have a 2004 4wd Supercrew and drivers' side (bank 2) is having the same problem as your truck was having:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...shing-cel.html

After checking everything else - I pulled the VVT solenoid yesterday and found a piece of the inlet screen broken and lodged partially inside. I'll report back tonight it it fixes the truck or not.

Well I'm happy report that the VCT oil control solenoid was the problem. My initial troubleshooting pointed to that but I let some "expert" mechanics (nobody from this board) talk me out of it because they had never seen one of these fail. Well at least I got the spark plugs changed out without breaking any of them . . .

Thanks Breeze12 - your problem helped me solve mine . . . .
