Replacing the spindle bearing on 85 F150 4x4 and dust boot/slinger. The new dust boot/slinger is actually two pieces, old one looks like one piece. Question is: which way does the slinger face? Flat side toward the diff or toward the hub?
On my '89 the flat of the slinger faces the diff. and then the seal is placed over the smaller lip of the slinger with the seal wiper lips facing the spindle. Don't know if '85's are different tho. There is also a plastic thrust washer too. The washer's inner bore is chamfered on one side. Slide this on the stub with the chamfer facing the diff. Where the washer rests, the stub shaft has a radius and this chamfer allows the washer to rest flat against it's mating surface. Drive the spindle bearing in with the stamped numbers toward the diff. Then slide the smaller spindle seal into the spindle up-tight against the bearing with the wiper lips facing the diff.
