Rear Main Seal

I was at the dealership yesterday getting an oil change. I noticed some oil under my rear main seal before I went in and pointed that out to them. They said it was a "sepage" rather than a "leak" so it was ok. Sounded fair enough... Next we got on the subject of tuners he was saying getting a tuner could turn the sepage into a leak (seems unrelated but i'm no mechanic), tuners/chips are bad yadda yada. Also he was saying if they do have to replace the rear main they have to take the cab off and pull the bed plate as well? Is that completely necissary? I switched dealerships for servicing convienence (close to work) but I may not be sticking to it.

Hey,

No they do not have to pull the cab for main seal, just the tranny. Now if your bed plate IS leaking than yes, they will have to lift the cab and pull the engine to replace it. Sounds like your new dealers tech is a little confused.

And even with seepage they should replace the main seal. That's like a doctor saying "well you kind of have cancer, but we will try to stop it when it gets really bad". They just replaced mine and it was just a very light mist of oil on the bell housing, not even enough to make a drip. Is your truck under warranty? If it is out of warranty I could see them trying to Up-sell the job saying it was a bed plate.

And never say the word Tuner at the dealership! And be sure to remove it if it goes in for work if you get one. And a tuner is not going to make any type of shaft seal leak any faster than it would normally unless you and hammering and I mean Hammering on your motor.

Good Luck, and find another dealer. And if out of warranty, find a good Independence diesel shop. When I have out of warranty trucks come through I use a local Big Rig diesel shop that works on the large applications with Powerstrokes.

I am not sure if you have one where you are or if the one out there is very good but I have used "Rush Truck Centers". They are Peterbuilt dealers but are licensed to work on Cummins, International (Powerstroke etc), Cat, detroit, Allison Trans etc.

The one out here does top notch work, and never up sells anything. I have taken a couple Dodge ram Cummins over there and they spent a 1/2 hour diagnosing, found nothing, and didn't charge me a dime.

Good luck man.
