hey everyone my name is Bret and i just recently purchased my first diesel its a 2000 f250 powerstroke. it has 150,000miles on it, its lifted 6inchs extended cab long bed it has a 5inch exhaust and afe intake.
im totally new to the whole diesel world, i love it !
anyway my question is the truck has no chip, it runs great everything its a very clean truck when i put the pedal to the metal it smokes some black smoke i mean nothing at all like trucks with chips its just a little bit when i have the pedal to the medal it doesnt do it any other time, im assuming this is normal? but i was just wanting to know what everyone thinks. thanks a lot!
Yes, a little bit of black is normal. Stock boost level should be 18-20 psi or so. Welcome to FTE! Stick around and you'll find tons of good info and ways to spend your money
All normal man! mine wasn't smoking at all under this situation, that wasn't so good. now i've fixed that (IPR) and i'm good to go, and you're just fine. if it is ever grey or white, or excessive, then you have a little work to do. hey... get the OASIS, and/or CARFAX and find out if they've done the recall change of the CPS yet. if you get that done, try to get them to let you have the old CPS in case it's the black one (you'll get a grey one).
wow thanks everyone for the quick response i apperciate it, i just wasnt sure about the smokeing part of it cause my one buddy said his buddy has a duramax and it doesnt smoke at all, i have heard mixed anwsers about it, i figured it was normal because it runs great and its not like it does it when im just driving the truck normal, i havnt paid to much attention to my boost gauge but i think i was only hitting 15, not to sure but i am sure that i love the 7.3l diesel! i will get a pic up here in a couple min.
Welcome aboard and stick around, we'll have that thing pumping out a "little" bit more black smoke in no time at all. As for your buddy with the Duramax, don't compare that piece of crap with your 7.3 ever. Yours will be hauling long after that one is gone.
its not the best picture i just took it real quick this morning at my work.
what is a good chip you guys would reccomend?
thanks all !
Start with Guages, then intake, then exhaust, then a DP, or TonWilderman, and there is one more growing in reputation.
Heres the thing though, how much do you want to get into this? I had a Hypertech for nearly 6 years. I didnt need gauges with it, nor an exhaust, I could tow anything and not need gauges. Where as if you go after some of these others, you want to watch EGT's, Trans, Boost. The chip will cost about 400.00, no matter what brand, but the gauges will cost you another 300.00+
I personally am very happy with the route I took, having the hypertech.. 1, it worked and worked well, 2 it made me so much happier when I got my DP!!!
Nice truck. The chip I will recommend is the DP-TUNER. There or others out there, but that is what I have. Don't think you can just install these custom chips and you will be good to go. We recomend a 4" exhaust, turbo back, intake system like the 6637, and gauges. Then you should start talking chips. This is not a off the shelf chip, they are custom for your truck only.
You are doing good by asking this stuff here before buying things that will not work as good on your truck. These guys here have done the trial and error thing for you already.
i have a afe intake on the truck already and it has a 5inch exhaust and it does have gauges, boost gauge, trans temp gauge, and pyrometer gauge witch isnt working? i dunno why? the guy i bought the truck from says he thinks the sensor went bad on it.
