so my buddy was telling me today that he talked to a diesel mechanic and he told him do not remove the foil from the pipe? he says its there for a reason and it keeps heat in? any indepth advice on this wether to remove it or not? thanks.

Most of the people here do it for cosmetic reasons but if you look around you will see Eugene's post about why the foil should not be removed.
