I will be overhauling the front-end on my 2000 Ranger 2wd and need ideas for where to put the jack stands. The Ranger has two jack points on the front, but they don't fit jackstands (too small). The cross-member is too wide and I guess makes me wonder about slippage. Obviously using the steering arms isn't an option. Another thing I notice about the Ranger is that the jack points are really high up there - which makes the jackstands have to reach for it (and wobbly).
So where do you put jackstands when you want to do extensive work on the front end of the truck? Is the frame cross-member the only option?
To give you an idea of the scope, I need to have the rotors turned - so while I have them off I figured I'd replace the tie-rod ends, lower ball joints, and possibly the upper tie-rods.
I know what you're saying about the jack stand being too narrow. I've got a couple of different types and capacity stands to work with which helps let me put the support where it's needed. My 3.5 ton stands have a wide cradle that lets them go on the frame where ever needed. See if the main part of your frame narrows down up in front close to the bumper. Maybe your stands will fit more securely in that area.
Not sure about the two wheel drive or if this will help but we just put a clutch, slave cyl and redid the CV seals on the front of a friend’s 2003 4X4 Ranger and supported the front on the two protrusions sticking out in front of the front suspension.
Well that's not much encouragement. I guess I haven't looked forward of the front suspension, hadn't thought of that. Once the weather clears I'll take a look.
