Well, my 88 is a jealous B**** now that I have been working really hard on my demo derby car (since the first day I got the car she's gone through a steering box, lower radiator hose, starter, starter wire, ground cable, hard starting) , and has relapsed and is back to snorting (I just ordered a return cap kit from Pensacola), and I was trying to start her yesterday at school and she wouldn't, so I was getting a friend to crank her while I gave her a little snort, and I heard a clunk clunk thud thud thud, I yelled at him to stop, and I look and effin fan fell off litteraly, it just unthreaded itself.
Anyone had this happen to them, I put it back on with a liberal dose of locktite so hopefully she'll stay on, but I'm wonderin the fan clutch is starting to go, cuz she makes a really odd grinding noise from in the front of the motor when she's cold and you rev her real quick
Clutch can be seizing up, and your're lucky the fan fell of while cranking - they usually spin themselves off upon shutoff, and promptly fly into your radiator and take it out.
Ok you must be like me I cant have to working vehicles at once as soon as i fix one the other brakes when i finished my 6.9 I snaped a shackle mount on my jeep when i was towing it home. when I fixed the brakes on my jeep the clutch went out in my integra.
it should be pretty hard for the fan to fall off since the way they are designed they sould tighten themselfs while the truck is runnin, in theory that is. But is it wasn't tight when the engine stopps it will losen its self up. I would say the bearing in your fan is junk get a new one, and good luck getting the hub off now.
I know, I know I'm really gonna regret it, but I've just gotta get this truck to hold together for another 4-5 weeks until I graduate then I'll have plenty of time to rip this beast apart and fix her properly. I have to remind myself this was a truck that was well abused by a ranch until they got tired of working on it, parked it for 5 years, I fired her up without touching much of anything and have been drivin the hell out of her since last august.
oow and hes got v belts at least with serpentine you can have some one put a braker bar iin the tentioner to keep tention on the belt to keep the water pump pully from spining. worst come to worst you'll have to heat the hub with a torch to bun the lock tite out.
Yeah, its gonna be rough getting it off, but maybe I can pull the whole water pump with the fan., but this summer I'm planning on competely strippin the truck down to just a motor, frame, and cab.
I'm wanting to replace everything that isn't less than 6 months old, do a ZF swap and replace the front clip with a 92-96, so I bet if the bearing and the rest of the fan clutch assembly can hold on for another month or two I'll be in the clear
Ok I'm bettin your demo derby isn't a ford the pickup is pissed your spending time with something it doesn't feel worthy. After the derby and you have destroyed the car everything will return to normal and the pickup may even do its own upgrades after it sees how you treated the car.
You can do a similar technique with a V-belt... Just pry on the belt, I find it helpful to do whats needed to get better wrap on the pulley as well.
I pretty much bet heat is going to be required, I don't think there is a way to grab the pump and or pulley well enough to do it without heat, without destroying anything.
Even with heat it's still not going to come off easy, heat only loosens the loctite, it's still gummy and comes apart hard.
I hate the stuff, It gets so misused, I did some machine work for a guy that put heads on an Aluminum block with a ton of red, then realized he put the heads on the wrong side and only one end was done for accessories. He tried to pull them out, he did! Threads and all!
Sorry, George I'm a BROKE I'm about to graduate and am going to be moving out immediately and I pay for all of my insurance, diesel, and parts currently, and will be paying for my rent and college. If I had money I wouldn't have a wore out 88 ranch truck, I would have a GEN 2 7.3 PSD.
But anyways, I'm really good at being able to source things from Junkyards and such and bein able to source help and parts, I'm just gonna have to try to fix her up this summer.

You are correct its a 1980 Olds 98. I even tried reassuring that my 88 is still my baby by laying a couple of good hits on the side of the derby car with the truck, but the 88 is still worried and jealous for my time.
Oh I see you know whetre all the holes in the fence are?LOL
My budy works a t a shop that shares a wall with a junk yard and the cars parked along that wall get pelted with parts quite regularly. Its kinda funny because they are throwing the parts they need from a fenced lot they can buy them from into a fenced lot they can't get them from.
Its gonna be a relief when I am gonna be able to park the ol girl this summer and be able to fix her properly.
I'm gonna temporarily be drivin a 92 F250 351W E4OD 4x4 that was GIVEN to me for *free*. I just have to go through the pain of trying to get a lost title and what not, but she runs and drives just fine, but is just ***()(*)*#&()&%)(&*% ugly. I mean its the ugliest thing I have ever seen.
