They must have been EXTRA stupid to have a Cummins in bad enough shape to need starting fluid.
My starter will last approximately 476 years since all it takes is a barely noticeable "BUMP" to get it to fire.
Now dodge when I was 13 years old I bet a nother kid my stevens single shot 12 guage would still be working perfect in 20 years and his mossberg bolt 20 guage wouldn't in 20 years. I collected that 20 bucks but 476 years I'm afraid I am already too old to take that bet.

WOW!
20 bucks was a lot of money back in the 50's when you collected.

if all the injection system is working right and in good shape and the glow plugs working right, and if you advance the timing over what it comes stock then the idi will crank very close to a cummins, mine always cranks within th 2nd to third time the engine turns, thats fast for an idi, but everything is in good shape on my motor, and it has the timing advanced, when the timing advance is on mine sounds similar to a psd, when it goes off it still almost has the psd rattle but it sounds more like an idi then
Both my 6.9 and 7.3 IDI's fire up probably within a 1/2 rotation, If that.
I do not have the timing advanced on either.
About as quick as one can turn the key to start and back.
If my vehicles do not start like that I find out why and fix em.
-Enjoy
fh : )_~
thats how mine is but i have the timing advanced a little bit, when its over 50 degrees i dont even have to use glow plugs, just for the fun of it one time it was 30 degrees and i didnt use the glow plugs and it was running within the 8th turn of the motor
There may be an IDI out there that will start as fast as my Cummins, and you guys could have them, but I literally just have to "BUMP" the starter on mine and it starts, I personally have never seen ANY other diesels start that easy.
My Dad's '97 Cummins doesn't start that easy though, it cranks almost as much as my PowerStroke before it fires.
Someone else posted a while back about how fast there IDI starts and knowing it's possible gives me a goal to work for. I thought some cranking was mandatory to get IDIs to start because I remember when they were new when I was a kid there were a TON of them around as Crummys, they all took some cranking to get going. Not an excessive amount but they didn't just fire on the first revolution even.
IDI"s new when you were a kid. Whose leg you jerking on.
They came out when I was 10.
I remember my oldest Uncle trading in a '72 Chevy 4wd. for his '86 F-250 4x4 ext. cab IDI when I was 12 his son still ownes and drives it.
I remember my other Uncle's buddy, that worked for us sometimes, going out and getting one of the NEW body styles in '89. I was 16 then and drove it occassionally on hunting trips when they wanted to hit the "kill bottle". That thing was a real dog and wouldn't start on anything resembling a cold morning. I remember practically having to build a fire under it to get it home at the end of an elk season.
I wish I knew then what I know now about these trucks, we could have polished that turd.
When they came out in 83 I had a 460 but i only drove it when my company truck was down I had a 79 5.7 cheby diesel man I couldn't have afforded that truck. A concrete salesman came out to the job and we went to town in his new ford 6.9 2x and I thought they would never build a better pickup.

And then somebody did.................... the Dodge-Cummins.
I can't believe you left it open like that. You're slippin'.
