I need to know where my smog pump is. I looking thru my Haynes manual but couldn't find anything on the smog pump in either the exhaust or emissions section. I researched the net but only confused myself. I searched here but couldn't find any pictures. If someone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. My smog pump needs to be relocated. A picture would probably be all I need. I thought I knew what a smog pump was but I'm not 100% sure.
on the 5.0 and 5.8 its on the bottom passenger side of the engine below the alternator so maybe check there? since i know on all fords of that age have the alternator in the same spot maybe the smog pump is the same too. ill try to look in my chiltons manual to see if i come up with anything

Thanks torino, I believe that's it! Now that I figured out where the smogger is, I need to know what exactly I have to relocate. Do you know what the part is called that sucks in air and brings it to the smog pump? I'm talking about the black thing next to the Coffee Can. I think that is what I'll need to relocate, which shouldn't be a problem. If I had to relocate the actual smog pump I would have to move all that other stuff around too, which I don't.
are you referencing that black plastic tank like thing next to the coffee can?, the coffee can is a vacuum reservoir, dunno what they call the other part. i think theres a hose from the smog pump leading to that plastic thing, if thats what your talking about
ahh ok, not sure exactly what its called but i will say it looks pretty good over there without it. i deleted most of the smog stuff on my truck and with that part outta there it frees up a good amount of space. of course ive still got that ugly coffee can sitting over there, which id like to relocate.

I'm in good shape, I have plenty of room to move the smog can.
coffee can is a egr vacuum reservoir, which i actually need to get a new one since mine has a rust hole in it, causing the truck to run a little rough. it basically stores vacuum and helps the engine make a smoother transition when decelerating as well as at all other rpms.

So is your truck running rough because the reservoir isn't holding vacume, or is it because your truck is throwing codes and confusing your computer?
No. I would like to clean my engine bay up though! What a mess. You can stand in the engine bay of a carb'd motor, but an EFI? Forgetaboutit! I am preparing my truck to be lifted a week and a half from now. My parts came in today.
Everyone who has done this says it's a peice of cake. It looks like it's going to be a headache, to me.
Not sure if the smog pumps link to the carbon canister or not. If there are vacuum lines going to and from it as well and one or two of them go towards the gas tank.... then again, it just may be an air filter for external air pumped through the smog pump into the exhaust. Most smog pumps that I recall had a very thin belt driving them (pre-serpentine belt days, anyhow). They generally have two 1" or so diameter hoses going to and from them - one goes to the exhaust manifold, IIRC, then the other to an air filter box or carbon canister or some such. Been a while since I've messed with 'em.
