also...if your you look at your flywheel and think for a moment it is too torn up then odds are it is. it can with stand a little abuse, some of my teeth are slightly chipped, but just barely. that is probably from the time that i was having the same problem. secondly, there is a difference in the flywheel on a 302 vs 351 i am not sure but if you have to pull the flywheel, then take the one you pull and go to the parts store, ask to see both(302/351) and compare them to the one you have. if i am right then you should definitly be able to tell. further more that casting # at the back of the block on the passenger side just above the oil pan (when you get the starter out you should be able to look up and see it more clearly) will tell you what block you have. if you can't find any resource that can positively id it then just call your local ford dealer. i am sure that they will tell you in the hope that it will churn up business for them and also that will be a way to 100% positively id the block. as far as the shim and starter bolts- try it before anything else, if we were face to face i would bet a paycheck on it. hope that helps and i appreciate your gratitude. remember let us know how it goes(i want to shut some people up)
10-4... but the fact remains everyone knows what i mean...you know maybe i was a little too hot headed, but it gets old after awhile.

aight, aight, i got the picture ....like i said though things could be more freindly around here. we should all be able to agree on that, right? i am chilled , no need for anymore replies as to the matter, i understand. i just got a little frustrated, and i wanted to take up for the guy. you know i posted on here before and was made to feel like an idiot, almost to the point i didn't want to deal with this site anymore. i am a new user, but i am on this site enough to remember that i don't want to run people off...and i don't think anyone else does. bottom line we are all here to help each other, we all, including myself need to keep that in mind. i formally apologize to fmc400 and the rest of you. appriciate the kudos brother( it is pretty sweet huh?) lol
Just wanted to let everyone know, the truck is fixed. The motor is a 351w with a C6 tranny. The motor came out of a 79 LTD.The wrong flywheel was installed.I finally got all the info from the history on the truck and the engine and tranny thanks to NumberDummy and with his info I was able to buy and install the correct flywheel.Truck starts everytime now. Thanks everyone for the help.
I'll address a couple things: If you have to shim a Ford starter, there is something wrong. Most likely the transmission has been removed, and when it came out, it hung on the flexplate and warped it. I know, because I've done it. So if you have to shim, test the run out on the flexplate, it's easy to do. Otherwise you have the wrong starter for that flexplate or the flexplate is worn out.
2nd. How I tell my Ford engines apart:
FE's have huge intake and half heads. The top of the valve cover bolts to the intake.
385's are a huge engine, with full heads, narrower intake than FE and timing chain cover is removable.
335's have big heads, but key is that the timing chain cover is cast as part of the block.
289/302/351's are smaller than 335's and have a removable timing chain cover. Because the 351w has a taller deck height than a 289/302, it's intake is wider. 351w intakes won't work on any other engine. Because it only works on that engine the intake will either have 351 stamped on it (aftermarket) or the firing order (13726548 (351w or 5.0 HO roller cam)), which is usually different than 289/302 (15426378). I hadn't thought about the 1 inch behind the block to the bellhousing, but that makes sense since the 351w has a taller deck because of the longer stroked crank. Hope that helps.
