I am new to the site and i am sure this is sure this is information you have covered before, but i cannot find it. i just bought a 56 f100 and the the vin plate on the door pillar is missing. Where else on the truck is the VIN located. Also in the glove box is a 2 page wiring diagram, which appears to be specific to my truck, and from the factory. it also has some numbers on it which appear to be part of the vin. did the factory furnish this type of info with the trucks??
thanks for the help,,,,just the first of many questions.
On the 1956 ford trucks....the vin plate is on the driver side door jamb. It is not on the glove compartment door like previous years. How are you registering your truck if no vin plate? Bill
If you don,t have a vin plate in the door jam there is a vin number stamped in the chassis. I have a 56 and the vin number on the chassis is stamped on the radiator crossmember on the right side behind the radiator. Also the number may also be stamped on the top of right side chassis rail between the front radiator crossmember to the back of the cab. The number on the chassis can be hard to find and probably need a wire brush.
Vino......I LIKE MY VINO.....especially red......haha
Vin numbers on the frame are sometimes not even found.....I have seen some that the frame was sandblasted and still no number.......Keep all paperwork with any vin numbers for reference.......what state are you in?
Julie.....Geneva on the lake has GOOD VINO.....not as good as Ca.,probably but good....haha.....Bill
thanks for all of the help. as far as registering it goes thats a good question. here in california they will have a s@#*! fit if has no vin and no papers even if i do have the license plates.

The redda the betta. I'm a red wine girl Cabs, old vine zins and Sirahs - even an occasional Alicante Busche! I need to get back there sometime - if for no other reason to visit Uncle Dave!
HEY how come we haven't heard from Terri lately? That 12 V conversion threat resurfaced where she and I chatted - haven't heard a word since!
What's up with that?

Actually, they are pretty hospitable since they need money and you have it. It is stamped in your frame some where.
May I offer a word of advice? Ok, I will anyway. Just for that evolution - the VIN check and the first licensing? Spend $40 and join AAA. They can do it all and they are so much easier to deal with. Plus it will save you the 2 hour wait at DMV (plus you can drive the truck up there for the inspection without plates or registration and they won't write you a ticket for no registration on it (DMV and CHP will want you to trailor it to their facility). Cops will if you get caught on the road on the way up there though. And you leave with a temp sticker. Well worth the money.
If for some reason you just can't find a VIN (and having the plates won't help unless it has been registered in the past 7 years in Ca.), they will assign you a VIN and you will have to come back with it stamped in the frame, or with a tag RIVETED to the cab.
If they get hard nosed, just whip out the wallet and show them the green - they'll chill!
As far as messin' with the DMV...I'd pass and go to the Auto Club instead.
Over the past 50 some years, I've registered 100 of vehicles. I've never had to have one inspected, including a 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk I bought in 2004 that had not been registered since 1960.
thanks for the info,,,i have heard that info about AAA before. i am just now getting all of the sheet metal off of the frame so i can have a good look around for the VIN, hopefully its still there
