Having trouble determining engine year

Ive been putting a truck together for a few months now for a friend of mine and Im having trouble determining the year of the motor. Its in a 97, and there is no stamped serial number on the block around the oil filter, it has the earlier style fuel filter housing w/ the fuel restriction sensor in the back of the bowl in the middle between the lines. The valve cover doesnt have a year on the sticker, however on the sticker It does say that it meets the emissions requirements for 1994. It is a PSD, it also has the plastic lid over the top of the fuel housing assembly for a psd marked direct injection turbo. Ive been muddling my way through fixing it anyways but a way to determine the exact year would be helpful. I runs but has a few bugs in it. Im concerned it may have the wrong PCM in it so I need to identify the engine and then the proper PCM code to make sure it will all work together the way it was supposed to. Any suggestions as well as any specific details about that particular engine would be appreciated as we are intending on modifying it.

What happened to the serial number? Anyway its very possible its a 1994.5 due to the VC sticker. The whole engine was probably changed. How many bolts hold the intake runner to the head?

Edit: BTW unless its a California emissions PCM on a non CA motor the tuning is pretty universal as far as running correctly. The changes are small between model year programming. What is the PCM code on PCM?

Havent had a chance to check the intake bolt count but its running the 96 or later thermostat housing, and the PCM code is ALF4.

Well it is 5 spd anyways. only in a 96 with what is probably a 94.5 motor with a 96or later thermostat housing and or water pump. Will that PCM have any effect/ problems running the older motor?

On 94-95 engines the oil pressure sending unit and inspection plug on the HPOP reservoir have tapered pipe threads, On 96-97 the threads on both were changed to straight threads with an o-ring.

The fuel bowls were also different:

Now this bowl is for a 95. The heater and water in fuel are in the same spot but the filter restriction sensor is down on the bottom of the bowl between the hoses. Also you can see the plastic strainer bowl that's below the regulator was deleted on the 96-97 canisters.

There was also a difference in the intake hoses between the y pipe and the plenums. 94-95 used hump hoses and on 96 they changed to a straight sided hose.

Different valve covers too but you can't tell by looking.

I know it has the older style fule housing assembly. The valve cover sticker says it is engine model A215. Cant read the stickers on the HPOP to get any info off of them.

Also it does have the hump hoses between the y pipe and the intake plenums. He sais the only number he can easily see if the compressor side of the turbo is 1.15 if Im not mistaken that was stock on all anways. He can get the numbers of the urbo sticker if that helps.

94-95 had 8 bolts holding the intake plenums to the heads. 96 and later have different heads and they have 10 bolts.

These are for a 10 bolt head, the early ones dont have the extra holes on the shallow end.

The shallow end on the pass side head will be just below the GPR, that should make it fairly easy to find out if it has 8 or 10 bolts.

It has 8 bolts so the heads and intakes are pre 96 so with all those factors Id gather its a 94.5 based on the valve cover sticker. Now for safety can you tell me the proper PCM code for a 94.5 PSD 5 Spd PCM so we can get a correct one and see if that improves anything or would we be better off or the same using the one thats in it?

BEG5, BEG6 and BEG8 are 94 5 speed codes but the ALF4 should run it just fine. Any of the OBS 5 speed computers will work as long as they are not for a Cal split shot truck. If yours is a 49 state truck your computer will run it.
