any way to get better fuel mileage with this thing, if i cant do something with it im gonna have to sell it soon its getting about 10 miles to the gallon and is gonna kill me when i start driving about 100 miles a day going to school. Any suggestions
10-12 MPG is what i have seen but i drive 80 mph on the fwy usually. I agree with eighttrac no possible way to make it get better mpg it's the nature of the beast. If your driving 100 miles to school you will definetly need a car.. Good luck to you.
Just did the Y pipe mod and FM70 muffler, and S&B CAI and SCT X3 tuner from 5star. 1st tank on the tuner 13.1 (this was tuner only before I got the exhaust and intake installed). If I get that again I will be really happy. The truck has consistently been 11 to 11.5 and my driving is pretty mixed city and highway and I do drive 80 on the highway.....I can't drive 55!!
The single biggest root cause for poor highway fuel economy in these things is the aerodynamics - or lack thereof. There is a LOT of frontal area and we leave a big hole.
Getting a small, slippery car is the best.
If not an option, minimize drag where you can.
1) SLOW DOWN. Drag goes up as the square of the speed... ie, going twice as fast requires 4 times as much power/fuel. Even a 5 mph reduction will be quite noticeable.
2) Skinny tires. Wider tires are a double whammy - wider means more air resistance, and they weigh more and take much more energy to acclerate. Run the smallest you can and keep at max psi.
3) Lower the truck. Get it as low as possible.
4) Keep it tuned up. Change air filter, change plugs. If over 150K, consider new fuel injectors - especially if you've used a lot of "no name" generic gasoline.
5) Use the lightest allowable grade of oil, and use synthetics.
All of those, except 1), may have very long payback times.
I can regularly get 12-13 on the highway even with mild lift and wide tires, so you should be able to get 14 with a very light foot. Getting more than that will be a challenge.
thanks on the replys, i dont usually push the truck unless im in alot of traffic but it does have a 2.5 lift on it when i got it so thats killin it to, i went from a diesel to this v10 thought it might be a good idea and has hit me bad everytime but i think i can deal with it cause diesel parts are way to high and i gotta buy an engine soon for the work truck ill just have to limit where it goes. by the way im used to letting my diesel warm up and cool down do you have to do that with a gasser?
Coal, that's priceless - when I used to drive diesel trucks, that's what I'd always say to my self when I hit the go-pedal - "Time to pour on the coal".
As for the MPG question, remember if you're doing local driving right now, the MPGs are going to come up when you get out on the highway. Keep the speed down, and drive like you have a rotten egg under the gas-pedal.
With our winter blend gas i was seeing 10 highway or in town. Now with the summer blend im seeing 14 highway, 12 city. Everything is stock for now.......
I've got a 2004 V10 F3250 long bed extended cab. I just drove to Florida and back from the DC area two weeks ago. Cruise control on I95 with the windows up and no ac I got 15.8 mpg. With ac on as I got into the southern part of the trip the mileage dropped to 12.6 mpg. Patience = gas savings for me. I stay off the accelerator whenever I can.
I have a '99 and JUST did near the same trip. King George VA to Orlando. I towed a 30ft TT (7680lbs) and averaged 6.9 mpg. My a/c really doesn't have much effect on it.
With my '08 CC SB, I am seeing 12-12.5mpg city, depending on how hard I am willing to mash the go-pedal. I try to keep it real light. If I pay no attention to how hard I mash the pedal - I will see 10.5mpg city. Highway at 70mph I recently got 14.4mpg on a 120mi. round trip. I am not 100% sure what I am getting towing with the mods now as both recent trips I have made with the camper behind the truck have been directly into 25-45mph (gusts to 60mph) headwinds. The V10 has a mountain of power
Mods are a Magnaflow muffer, Job 2 4x4 air dam and an Airraid CAI. I run Mobil 1 5-20 full synthetic. I will be looking into a tuner from 5 Star later this year.
I bought this thing to tow our camper, not to get good mpg while commuting. If you need really good commute mileage, find a used Honda or something like that. Good luck - I love my V10!!!

Oops..... Drag force goes up as square of speed. POWER requirements go up as the CUBE of the speed.
So to go twice as fast requires 8X the power.
To go 10% faster requires 33% more power/fuel.
