Been a while since i've posted mainly cause the truck has been problem free. But anyway, I just got home from visiting my parents' house and as I was pulling out of their driveway, I notice a huge 20"+ diameter puddle of motor oil on my parent's driveway. So I park her and take a flashlight to the bottom of the truck. I have oil from the back of my pan all the way to the differential, majority towards the passenger side. I immediately check my oil. I can only pickup 1/2" of oil from the bottom of my dipstick. I had to add 3 quarts to get to the full level. Start her up and there is no spraying of oil while she's running.
I only live 3 miles away so my dad says get in and get your truck home while she's running. I was a little hesitant but she was running good so I took off. Came home, took the flashlight and crawled under. There is some major seepage coming from between the block and the starter, kind of around the end of the block where the trans mates to it. It's puddling in a pan in my driveway as I type this...
I took a brief look above the engine in the valley and it's dirty but dry all the way to the back. No immediate leaks that I could see at night with a flashlight.
So question is.... what could fail on the passenger side of the engine? The engine runs good and doesn't sound like it's misfiring at all. Not sure if I could have cracked the block, I hope not.
I'm going to try and take the day off tomorrow or tuesday and have me and my mechanic take a crack at it and hopefully get some pre-"attack" insight from you guys.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Erik
p.s. No mods to this bone stock engine other than a 6637 filter.
It's coming from the top of the engine. There is a drain on the passenger side rear of the valley. If it's not spraying, it's probably the turbo or pedestal O-rings. Could be HPOP, but normally it's a definite spray because at idle, we're talking 500 psi.
It sounds to me as though It could be coming from the bottom of the dipstcik. There's a big thin nut that attaches the dipstick to the oil pan, right above/behind the starter. It is kinda of hard to see. Check the nut first visually to see if it's worked itself loose. If it appears to be ok, then you'll have to start the truck and watch this spot with a flashlight as it's running. If it's bad or the nut looks loose, it will dump alot of oil out there. If this nut is loose, you don't want to tighten it. It''ll make it worse. There's an O ring in there that goes out sometimes, it'll have to be replaced. A word of caution! Take your time crawling under the truck while it's running. Surevey the area where you're going to reach under the truck to grab or put your head and so on, to manuvere yourself into position. You don't want to grab something hot, moving etc.
Ok guys, my mechanic took a brief look at it on Wednesday and we ran the engine while it was on jacks and it would not leak. As soon as we stopped the engine it started leaking between the starter and block. He took apart the flywheel access cover and no oil coming from there so that's good. He felt around the turbo pedestal and there wasn't any fresh oil. The firewall is clean.
He ran out of time, but is reserving all of saturday to take things apart to get a better look. But right now his guess could be valve cover related. Is there anything in and around the valve cover we should be looking out for? We obviously didn't have enough visible access to see if it was indeed the valve cover.
Did he get back there and actually look around under the turbo/pedestal? Could be the turbo-to-pedestal O-rings or pedestal-to-block O-rings. The latter would be my bet at this point...
That guy has some good things, but he don't have all the knowlodge that these FTE guys have. If the valley is free of oil, you might look at the block around the starter. I have seen where the block casting will crack on some. This is just a post. Hope you find it and it is not much.
Joe has stuff, try what he says. I don't think its the dip-stick.
