3 speed OD
"Good Luck!!! If you find one on the internet for 1200 bucks buy it, cuz that is a steal."
As far as the cable, and all that, I think DC has all that stuff available. Happy Hunting!!!

$1200.00 is waaay tooo much. I can buy them all day long for much less than half that price.
There's been at least two for sale in the classifieds here on FTE. The highest price was about 300 bucks, one came with all the parts needed to install it, except the driveshaft.
People make wild statements because they do not know what the various applications are, what years the transmissions were used, and dunno the fact that the cars used the same ones as the trucks did.
They also have no clue where to look.
There are two different 3 speed overdrive transmissions, they do not interchange.
What year and what engine size is the truck?
1953/64 F100's with: 223/239/272 & 292's use the Borg-Warner T-86 Overdrive.
1954/64 cars with the same engines (plus the 312) also use the T-86.
1965/72 F100's with 240/300/352/360/390's used the Borg-Warner T-85N.
1964/67 cars with 352's also use the T-85N.
The T-85N is kinda hard to find, the T-86 is not.
As far as buying one on ebay or any other internet site is...you have no idea of the condition and are only going by what the seller says.
Many other makes of cars/trucks used these same two transmissions. The ad may say T-85 or T-86, but that doesn't mean they'll work in a Ford.
Nash, Hudson, Studebaker cars/trucks, Packard, Kaiser, Frazer, Lincoln (with flathead engines), among others, used both types.
Besides the transmission, you also need the overdrive cable, the wiring harness, the firewall mounted relay and the kickdown switch, which is mounted above the accelerator pedal.
These parts are specific for certain years, they are not "one size" fits all.
The various driveshafts are different. Car driveshafts won't work in trucks, and there's prolly 15 different truck driveshafts.
If the trans doesn't come with these parts, they can be a b!tch to find, and Carpenter doesn't have much of anything.
On the O/D unit itself are a governor and solenoid. By themselves, these are also hard parts to find.
