Im looking to purchase my neighbors 97 Explorer 5.0 AWD for a spare vehicle, The previous owner told him it needs a camber kit, he nor I know exacltly what that consists of. Can anyone shed some light on this?
I hope its nothing major.
It also has a bad squeek in the left front suspension. Everthing is tight, sounds like a control arm bushing?
A camber kit is used to help align the front end. It will allow the alignment shop to tilt the top of the tire in/out as needed. The kit consists adjustment plates.
You will need to lift the Explorer by using a jack under the lower ball joint. Remove tire. Remove the bolts holding the upper control arms to the frame (2 bolts per side). Install the adjustment cams when you put the bolts back in.
The alignment shop can install the adjusters also if you don't.
My '97 5.0 AWD just turned 180,000 miles and still runs great!

Thanks alot 460, Thats what I was looking for. the left front tire is wearing on the inside. now it makes sense.
The one Im buying has 173,000 and runs strong.
It's been a couple years since I put the cams in mine, and I'm drawing a blank as to how many individual plates are needed. I'm thinking 4 per side, but there's a chance I'm mistaken.
you dont need a camber kit. you might need a front end alignment if the tires are wearing oddly. the kit can help someone adjust the alignment, but it is not required, and does nothing to just "install" it.

He claims his left front tire is wearing on the inside, but you said he doesn't need a camber kit, but maybe an alignment. Without a camber kit, what can be adjusted to correct his excessive camber situation? The camber is not adjustable without a camber kit.
The question I would ask is: "Who decided it needed a camber kit, and why?" It's possible to have a worn ball joint (most likely upper) causing the tire wear on the inside. I would check the ball joints before buy a camber kit or going to have it aligned.
