I swapped out the CPS just to see if that was the problem. Problem is I broke the black CPS trying to get it out, now I'm stuck with the grey POS until I can find another black one. Dammit
I don't get smoke while cranking. Neighbor verified that as I had him watch my tailpipe as I cranked.
Ran KOEO test and buzz test, passed both. All 8 injectors buzz clear and strong.
Got plenty of fuel and ICP.
Not quite sure what's going on with it, but for certain my batteries are drained out. That may have been the original problem all along, since I haven't really cranked it but just a few times. I'm dropping down to 9.8 volts while cranking. Definately not enough to get the injectors to fire.
So, batteries are on the charger right now to see if I can get them up and alive again. If the batteries are the problem, then it means my alternator might be shot too. I was worried when I got this one that it wasn't going to hold up.... and I might be right. Guess I'll find out for sure once I get it started and I can monitor voltage while the engine is running.
The only other thing I can think of is if the fuel bowl heater is blown
Shouldn't be, the fuel bowl is one of the newer pieces on my truck. LOL Plus, I'm still getting the WTS light and all the gauges, and everything else works.
Suck! Hope its a bad alt, that is easy and cheap! If ya need help, just give me a call.
Thanks Andrew, and I got your PM. I'll try the battery charger first and see what happens.
Ok, well the battery charger idea failed. Charged both up completely, tried to crank, and the engine just drags like it's barely turning.
So I hooked up AE and tracked a few things while cranking. ICP, voltage, and duty cycle are all normal and working. Verified that the injectors are firing.
However, engine RPM's while cranking only hover around 150-160 RPM's, and dropped below 100 after a few seconds. Just listening to it crank, it sounds like it's a dying animal or something. The engine is definately dragging it's butt trying to spin. Off hand, I can't remember how fast the starter should be spinning the engine to get it to start. Anyone have that info handy?
Battery voltage also did drop while cranking, although it didn't reach the 10.5 critical voltage until after some extended cranking. However, I still got a faint "click click click" towards the end of my cranking, as if the batteries were dying. So, it's possible that they just can't handle the load. My charger doesn't load test batteries. If they are dying that fast after a full charge, then something's wrong with them. I think these batteries are almost 4 years old IIRC.
So at this point I'm thinking either the starter or the batteries. I did check the cables, only a small amount of corrosion was there at the battery terminals, but not anything that would keep the batteries from working.
Oh, temps are in the 50's today.
Andrew, I think I'll give you a call. Maybe we can hook up jumper cables and see if the starter still drags it's butt. I don't think a Pontiac Grand Am has the ummph to jump start a PSD.
Hey, everyone give reps to Andrew for coming over and helping me. We hooked up jumper cables and my truck fired up. Let it idle for a bit, and even checked the alternator output with AE, and it showed 14 volts even while the engine was cold.
So the result is bad batteries. I think they are actually only 3 years old, so they didn't last very long. They are Energizer batteries, 900 CC amps.
New batteries should have me back on the road again.
And everyone rep Andrew for his help. Thanks for coming over!
