A wicked Wheel will run you about $75 or so. It's advantages are that it helps to tame turbo surge (when you add a chip or tuner) and it gives a nice whistle.
Can't say I have ever seen a worse looking intake system in the years I have been on FTE.
Yup. Same here.
It's not the end of the world, but I'd sure do the CCV mod, and change that compressor turbine wheel. ANY imbalance, at the RPM it turns, is significant-enough to cause abnormal wear.
I woudn't worry about the missing pieces, they're stuck in your intercooler somewhere. I suppose it makes a nice schrapnel filter.
The way that intake looks, I'd be pulling the entire I/C piping and I/C itself, spider, and plenums off and clean it from filter to plenums. That's NASTY! You'll also want to take the compressor housing off (which you'll do when you pull the turbo to put the new wheel on) and clean it out.
Here's what my van turbo looked like in the compressor before I cleaned it (yours probably looks similar):
Here's what it's SUPPOSED to look like:
However, the wheel showed a slight amount of wear (and I mean VERY slight, so I re-used it), so it wasn't eating dust like yours. Here's what my wheel looked like after cleaning & remounting:
I don't know about a complete turbo rebuild, but for sure take all the intake plumbing off and give it a good cleaning.
Then put a WW on and run with it.
Get ahold of Clay @ RiffRaff diesel he will hook you up with the WW and everything you need to do CCV mod. And a new turbo! You are darned lucky you dont have alot of blowby. That turbo being shot like that i would be worried about your piston rings...
Thanks so much for all the help guys! I really appreciate it. I'll have to check the turbo shaft another day as they are calling for rain here the next couple of days, probably next sunday. How easy is it to change the WW as I am fairly capable but nervous about doing a job like that for fear of making things worse? What differences will I notice after replacing the dusted wheel? And what is turbo surge?
It's not a complicated job, just a bit painful working on top of the engine. You don't have to pull the turbo, but you'll have to get that compressor cover off, and it's a bit of a PITA to take off in the truck. If I were you, I'd get a set of O-rings and pull the turbo & pedestal for peace of mind, and get it all cleaned up. Then you'll know it's all good for sure.
That wheel is shot, I have never seen that kind of oil build up, odd. The CCV mod would fix that right up! Guess its time for a WW.
Me neither! I've had my truck for 8 years and 227K miles and it's never had that much oil in the intake.
You definately need a new compressor wheel, from the time I saw it, the first thing that came to mind was: "dusted, damaged turbo". You may get lucky and not have an issue with the rest of your engine, but one this is for sure, you need a new wheel. Give Clay a call and he'll get you fixed up.
