I recently replaced the radius arm bushings on my '96 2 wheel drive (my brackets were luckily bolted and not riveted :-).
The instructions that came with the Moog bushings said to torque the 1 1/8" nut to 100 ft-lbs. I did so. Yesterday I decided to install the cup shaped heat shield on the passenger side. While doing so I noticed that the nylon seat behind the driver side bushing had broken and most of it was missing. The parts store gave me replacements for both sides and I reinstalled them. This time I just tightened them up with a ratchet until a couple of threads were showing on the end of the arm, and I fealt moderate resistance.
How should someone know how tight to make them? Seems to me Moog should say "tighten X revolutions after hand tightening". I may have gotten some grease on the threads or else they weren't in the condition the designer expected, and I may have over stressed the nylon seat.
i notice with the bushings not so tight, the truck handles a little more gently on the road.
Also I was a little concerned about the nut loosening up from vibration w/ only 2 thrds showing.. so i cleaned the threads up w/ a solvent and rust will set in pretty soon.
It makes no difference whether you tighten up in the air or on the ground. It should be a snug fit either way. If they move when you lower the truck, they're not tight enough.
The nut should bottom out on the treads that are available. Make sure to kock off any loose rust that is on the radius arm stud anD the bracket. I always apply a good amount of greese to the bushings too, that way it keeps stuff from rusting, and let's the bushings move without "chafing". I always just tighten the nut down all the way with the impact with the truck sittting on level ground.
I did tighten the drivers side nut until it bottomed out. When I was doing the passenger side I looked over at the drivers side and saw the spacer cracked.
Do you mean spacer? The part I'm talking about is just behind the bracket. It's flat on one side and dished on the other. I put the dish side facing forward, just like the ones that I took off.
Since I broke one I put the old white ones back on. The rubber bushings I took off were 3 piece set and said Ford. The washers and the white spacer also said Ford. This new Moog is a 2 piece set.
