While I have my transmission out I figured that I may as well replace the clutch. I called Auto Zone and they have to SPECIAL ORDER it and it will be $270 (new)!!
Is this the going price??
Whats up with that?
I also have the noise that a lot of the other forum members have complained of.
When the truck is cold and the trans is in neutral I get a clanging noise like a convertor heat shield.
It's clutch related because if you depress the clutch it goes away. Once it warms up it does not rattle. It will clang when ever the clutch pedal is released, even as I'm driving down the road. When it warms up it goes away.
In the Haynes manual it talks about setting some tabs in the pressure plate plate but it does not explain it very well.
What does this adjustment do and what is it for?? Someone please explain.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Nov-02 AT 10:53 PM (EST)]Its a 97 F150, 4X4 5 speed (M5OD) 4.6L. I found a new clutch, press plate and throw out bearing at the ford dealer. It's only $188 . Boy I'm impressed! Everybody else wanted $345 - $380!
I'm still wondering if any body knows what causes that clutch noise when the engine and trans are cold. If you have an opinion I'de sure like to hear it!
Also I need to get some clarification on the clutch perssure plate adjustment. In the Haynes manual it talks about setting some tabs in the pressure plate plate but it does not explain it very well. What does this adjustment do and what is it for?? Someone please explain.
Thanks
I can't help with your adjustment problem , but the Very Best clutch for your truck is a CenterForce , Double Friction , Clutch and Pressure plate and throughtout bearing........probably about 290 or so from Summit , fd
The noise your hearing is more than likely your throwout bearing.
But That trans is noted for having input shaft bearings go bad.
when you get the trans out see how much play you have with your input bearing. put trans in neutral when out and spin the input shaft if it feels rough or has alot of play its bad.
also change your pilot bearing and make sure you use a alignment shaft
to setup your new clutch disc.

The trans repair and clutch replacement is complete and everything went smooth! I got the clutch package from Ford and was very happy with it. I liked the price and it worked fine for my application. The pressure plate adjustment that is required turned out to be easy.
All you have to do is put it in a Hydraulic press, push the tab all the way to the right (CCW) and hold it there while you release the pressure on the springs. Reply the pressure until the plastic part reads the specified measurement.
Thanks for all of the help.
