zf-5 which atf?
What is the best ATF to use in the zf-5? Iv searched around and a lot of threads came up but nothing with the info I was looking for.
Also the reverse light plug does not have the harness plugged in. Does anyone have the part number to order the new plug in harness and I can just rewire it.

The manual calls for ATF in the ZF5. I use regular Mercon- Dextron 3. Some use Royal Purple or other such syn. fluids, or 5W-20 motor oil to quiet down gear roll over if they have a single mass flywhel conversion.

It depends on the year and transmission type (4 spd, 5spd, 6spd) ... but here are some general guidelines:
Most 1987-1997 F250 with either the Mazda or S5-42 ZF manual transmission require DEXRON/MERCON fluid.
1999-2007 models with the S5-47 5 spd or ZF S-650 6 spd manual transmission also calls for DEXRON/MERCON.
If you were referring to an older 70s-80s model truck with 3 spd or 4 spd manual, it takes 80W (or 80W90 ... or 75W90) gear oil.

ok i never knew the zf5 called for ATF on the newer models so i learned something new today if i would have gotten a newer year zf5 i sure would have screwed that trans. up and wasted all that money thats one thing i like about this site i can learn something new every day thanks yall

yeah i didnt know any manual trans used ATF till i started searching around here the other day. its a 91. ill just throw in some napa atf i didnt know if there was a preferred brand/type though.
