Foamy Diesel

Greetings, I have a 2000 F-250 PSD short bed. About two years ago I had a new fuel tank unit put into my truck. Ever since then whenever I fill up the fuel foams and the filler nozzle clicks off prematurely. If I nurse the fuel into the tank I can get another 6 - 7 gallons in. This has been frustrating because of the long time it takes to get a completely full tank. I had the truck back to the dealer and they could find nothing wrong. I took apart the filler tube and vent to check for obstructions and they appear clear. I would appreciate any suggestions you guys may have. Does the new low sulpher fuel foam more than the older diesel?

Thanks

Drop the tank and cut the fill & vent tubes to within a 3/4" from the top. That will let you fill the tank almost full before the pump clicks off.

I don't think the fuel is any more foamy than it has always been. Sounds like your fuel inlet and fuel vent lines protrude too far into the tank. You'll probably need to shorten these lines to correct the problem. Go up to the tech folder and look for a thread titled "Harpoon Fuel Tank." This will provide the procedure to accomplish the task.

I'm guessing you bought the truck used and the previous owner had already performed the harpoon mod on the old tank.

I have a question on the harpooning, why is it needed to shorted the filler tube? Will it still foam if the filler tube is submerged?

Just go here ands read all about it: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/2...tml#post176219

This subject has been around for a very long time.... diesels have the same fuel tank as a gas engined truck.... gas does not foam like diesel does.

Here is what the fill and vent tubes look like inside your tank:

As soon as the fuel reaches the end of the vent tube it causes the nozzle to click off.

To fix the problem just get some pvc cutters and reach in through the opening for your sending unit and cut the vent tube as short as you can. Then the nozzle will not click off until the level reaches the new end of the vent tube.

You don't have to cut the fill tube, just the vent tube like this:

Success!

Thanks again for the information guys. I can now fill the tank without taking all day to do it! One other question though, The two vent lines that the instructions said was a friction fit with no clamps were capped off. Just wondering why some tanks had lines to these vents and others have them capped off. BTW, the caps were acutally vented themselves. Has anyone experienced leakage through these vents?

Thanks
