'92 E40D no forward-HELP
a few days ago i was climbing a hill in my '92 F250 and it just stopped pulling. coasted. had to roll back down the hill, and once i got to the bottom, it worked again, but i took off yesterday from a stop sign and it did the same thing, but it didn't fix itself this time. i had reverse so i backed up to the parking lot and left it overnight. me and my dad got it home and i took the pan off and looked for anything obvious. the fluid was correct and nothing looked broke when i was under there. what could be the problem? this week i'm going to put it back together and tow it to the tranny place. that is, unless it's something i can fix. sorry for being long winded, but i'm pretty frustrated. reverse still works just fine, but nothing in any forward gears. any ideas?
Im not a tranny expert but since you asked for any ideas well heres my less than 2 cents worth.
When I was low on tranny fluid, I could back up but not pull foward. This was right after I boiled out alot of tranny fluid pulling a trailer. Added some and works ok now. I noticed you said the fluid was correct but wasn't sure if you ment correct level, type, wasn't burnt, ect. The only thing different here is you was going up hill and since the pickup part of the filter is at the back of the tranny, I think it should have had plenty of fluid.
Another idea is to unplug the tcm fuse (if it has a fuse) or unplug the trannsmission wiring harness from the transmission and see what happens.
Just 2 simple things I would check out and do.

tried both of those today, replaced fluid with all new mercon, warmed it up, still no forward. i'm going to bring it in to someone this week. how much do you think i'll expect to pay? little worried, cuz 16 year old have no cash!!!!
Well, before they fix it make sure you get a signed written estimate and you can afford it. Also, make sure that its agreed that they will call you if a new problem pops up and not to fix it until you give them aprovel if its going to cost more. It would suck if you couldn't afford the repairs and then try to get your truck back because they did more than you thought they was going to do. Alot of shops do this and its unfair and really puts people in a bind. I know cause I have seen it several times to others. If they won't agree, take it to someone that will.
It would be cheaper if you pulled it yourself as well and took it to them. Then if you can't afford it or they do more than you bargened for, atleast they don't have your whole truck!!! And should save some on removel and installation cost.
As for how much, someone else is going to have to chime in cause I don't have a clue about that.

No forward gears at all sounds like a mechanical failure inside the transmission. Parts that break don't always produce debris in the pan. I know thats not the answer you were hoping for, sorry.
You can phone around at different transmission shops and ask what a rebuild would cost or if they have a ready rebuilt transmission instock. You will save some money if you can swap the transmission yourself, but dropping one of these things will probably take you a day if its your first try, and its a heavy sucker.
Also don't rule out going to a ford dealer for a price on a reconditioned transmission. Some of them have been known to give good prices and the warranty is among the best.
