ABS Pulsating
We just bought our first OBD2 Ford, a V8 AWD Explorer and I'll have to say that I'm just not familiar with Ford Engineering or their quirks. I've been a GM guy for the last decade or so for the most part. While most things are familiar, Ford does some things different from the rest..that's for sure.
Our 96 has the same issue. We bought it a week ago and it had the problem on the test drive. Since I do most of the mechanical work on my cars, I figured an ABS issue like this couldn't be too hard to figure out. I haven't torn much apart or done much inspecting on the vehicle yet.
Symptoms:
Only kicks in in the last 3 feet of stopping, doesn't matter how fast or slow, how much pedal pressure is applied..the ABS buzzes and you can feel the pedal get a little lighter.
It doesn't seem to happen if I'm turning to the left and braking, but it will when I'm turning to the right, or going straight ahead.
I pulled the rear wheel sensor out and tested it since it's the easiest to test, and I read online that metal filings could cause the problem from them collecting on the magnet. Took it out, tested with a multimeter and cleaned and replaced. No dice.
My thoughts are that the sensors are going to be fine in the front also and that I have an issue with thrust on one of the front wheels...which I suspect to be the right side. Why? When the brakes buzz, the vehicle pulls slightly to the left, which to me, would indicated that the left brake is doing more work than the right.
I was told that the front wheel bearings were replaced because there was a bad noise coming from them and they thought that it might be the cause of the ABS issue, which it obviously isn't...at least not the physical bearing and/or race. I'm only assuming the job was done properly as the guy I bought the truck from works with/for a service station chain ( 9 reputable stores, all doing extremely well ). Reagan said "trust but verify", which is what I will end up doing, but I wanted to know if anyone here had any thoughts.
There is NO ABS warning light on, and the brakes are perfect otherwise ( 4 wheel discs )
