I have 3 questions #1 how can you tell the difference between a T18 , T19 & NP435 . #2 what is a 4 spd out of a early 70s truck(is it a NP425?) .#3 will the early 70s 4spd fit in place of a T18 in a 1982 f350 ? Can anybody help me out?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 29-Nov-02 AT 09:59 PM (EST)]Probably a T-18, according to http://www.motivegear.com/tech_info/tranny_guide/tranny_guide.html
Could be either the T-18 or NP-435 as they were both used in early 70's trucks. The only way you're going to know for sure is to crawl underneath and look for the tag on the PTO cover, the NP symbol, or the shift tower. The NP shift tower will be aluminum. The Borg Warner will be cast steel. Bring a magnet.
The T-19, with it's synchronized first gear, wasn't around until sometime in the very late 70's or very early 80's.
If you pull the older tranny, some food for thought:
Check your input shaft length and spline count. Some of these transmissions may not readily fit up. Spline counts and shaft lengths changed.
