Auto trans question

Sorry for my ignorance, I've been driving a manual for the past 15 years...
When you are driving at a constant speed and whomp on the gas pettal, should the tack:
a. stay put and slowly rise with the speed
b. slide up about 500 rpms and rise with the speed?

It depends on what speed you are going. It should downshift to a lower gear and raise the rpms quite a bit when you stomp on it.Either way the rpms should rise rather quickly.

as posted above.. when u floor it it will downshift and unlock the torque converter giving a big jump in RPM then you will see the RPM rise slightly while the speed increases quite a bit until the Torque converter locks completely and then you will see a preportional increase between RPM and vehicle speed beyond that point...
A torque converter is a fluid coupling that allows slipage between the engine and trans. once its locked up based on engine speed and torque then its like a manual trans clutch with a solid connection between engine and trans

Which would make a 5-800rpm increase when accellerating normal, right?
I'm noticing some odd shifting too... Kinda like 3rd gear gets skipped sometimes (huge drop in R's). I understand there is a computer that can be reset to delete what it has learned... Would reseting the shift computer (disconnecting battery for 5 minutes) help that?

On a 7.3 w/ 4r100 (what you have), it will seem like a huge drop in the RPM's sometimes. It's the combination of TC locking and shifting into 4th that makes it seem that way.

Thanks aldridgec. That makes sense. I pulled battery terminals off for 5 minutes last night... Looked at how ugly everything was and decided to do maintainance on the terminals. Two hours later (I'm sure the trans program was reset by then :P) I put it back together. I still need to take for a testdrive.
