First, discription of our fuel system (short version) the pump pulls fuel from the tank through the low pressure side on the pump and pumps it (at low pressure) through the fuel filter housing and then back to the fuel pump where it enters the high pressure side of the pump where it is pumped (under high pressure) through the banjo bolt and through the fuel passages in the heads to the injectors and then out of the head to the FPR (Fuel Pressure Regulator) which bleeds off any pressure over the preset (thus maintaining pressure) and allows the excess fuel to return to the tank (with a small amount returning through the small screen back into the fuel filter housing).
So, BlueMule is right and wrong, yes you can use the stock filter housing with two pumps ( low pressure lift pump before the filter housing and then a high pressure pump after the housing, and alot of plumbing and line relocation and you will still have a valley full of stuff, a stock regulator that is hard to adjust, etc. --which equals small benefit for alot of work)
One of the big benefits of electric fuel is cleaning up the valley (making engine repair easier and relocating everything under the truck so if a leak develops it's easier to service and less messy).
