Okay im at a bit of a loss. The only book i have goes back to 80. the only stuff the parts guys at the local auto parts store can show me is back to 83. Is the c6 in this 71 f100 going to use Type F or CJ(dextron II?)?
ive seen 11.7-13.2qts for capacity. I dont want to go off a "hunch" from the auto parts guys at the local chain because they are wrong more than they are right
type F is what i always use. but damn 12.75 quarts? last time i dropped the pan and changed the filter and refilled it was only a few quarts. cant remember. but i know it wasnt no 12.75!!! maybe the rest gets stored in the tc or valve body or something? i know there is a hidden drain plug for the torque converter that you acess through the flexplate via the little bellhousing cover. but i figure the fluid would all sink down to the pan when you shut the motor off........
Matt, Pull the dip stick, it should say to use Type F. There is a new one available and it says so on the label. Bill can tell you for sure, but I can never remember II, III, IV, don't use this or it'll die.
I believe the 13 qt. is for new fill including torque converter, but don't recall normal service.
Don't know what you are doing, but if you are changing fluid in a running truck, I have always gone to a tranny service center and had it done for me because of the darn mess it can make. There is no drain plug, so the pan has to be removed and it makes a mess.
Ford dealer transmission service: Even tho the trans takes 12.75 quarts, 13 quarts were charged out on a gazillion repair orders.
If only the filter is changed, the trans only takes about two quarts.

Just in case someone chimes with their opinion inre to MERCON, here's what the '73/79 car & truck parts catalogs say:
XT-2QDX: Automatic Transmission Fluid "MERCON" For use in 1977/ C6 and C4 A/T's.
thanks, thats just what i needed guys. I didnt even think to pull the dipstick!
Jo, the tranny is leaking and it looks to be coming from the shifter input. Ive pulled pans on a few trannys so im prepared for the mess the truck isnt mobile yet and honestly id rather do the work myself. I only pay for inspections

Where is it leaking...from the manual control selector lever on the side of the case?
If so...do not remove the pan...cuz there's no way to get to that seal (D5AZ7B498A) that way.
Remove the outer selector lever is how you gain access. The seal is pressed into the case.
i havent looked at it real well Bill but it appeared to be coming from the gear selector shaft on the driver side of the case. Im pulling the pan to replace the gasket/filter and fluid while im at it. It may be leaking from the pan as well, my cousin said he tightened the bolts a few times to try to stop the leak so im sure the pan is deformed. I know for sure its coming from above the pan so thats where im starting. This truck has only gone a few thousand miles in the past 5 years or so but i want to tackle it before i hand it off.
thanks ill be sure to check it over. the auto parts store didnt have the seal so i gave them a hard time. wont be here til monday. I did go out and drive the truck for about 5 miles, first shakedown since the suspension/brake/ignition mods.
