??? C4 Transmission - What's the differences ???

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Dec-02 AT 02:08 PM (EST)]Greetings from Germany !!!

Need your help. I am puting a C4 behind my new (old) 289 SB Ford and have a few questions with respect to the different models, versions, bellhousings, ...

At first, here's two pics of a transmission that I just got.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gallery/sizeimage.php?&photoid=10818&.jpg

https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gallery/sizeimage.php?&photoid=10819&.jpg

The little tag attached on the right side reads this (in two lines):

PEJ S1 G11C
D9ZP AB

Does that tell anything I should know ?

Now concernig the bellhousing:

I understand that there's two bolt patterns for the mounting to the engine. 5 bolt and 6 bolt. I understand that the 6 bolt was used from 65 onwards, right ?

I have also heard that there's two different mountings to the transmission. One where the bell housing has separate bolts and one where the bell housing shares the bolts with the pump. I don't have a bell housing yet and need to get one. Do I need the one which shares the bolts with the pump? That's the way it looks to me looking at above pics. Or ???

What about the flywheels (which I yet do not have)? What are the differences. I understand that they come in three different sizes (i.e. number of teeth) ?!?! What do I need ?

Is there a difference between C4s used behind 6 Cylinder engines vs. those used behind 8 Cylinder engines. If yes, what is it ? Will a normal rebuild take care of this or are special parts needed to make it a V8 transmission ?

Also heard that there are two different dip stick versions. One that goes into the pan (sideways ???) and one from the top. I guess I have the latter, but I am not 100% sure as this is the first C4 that I take a close look at.

Many questions. Sorry, But I really need to understand all that.

Can anyone suggest a web site with info on C4s ???

It is not as easy to find these C4s in Germany. Sometimes you need to travel some distance and you better know what you need before you go check something out that you are being offered.

THANX IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP !!!!

:-) :-)

I cant help with all your questions but i think you will need the bellhousing that shares bolts with the pump. As for 5 or 6 bolt bellhousings you definately need 6 bolt. The 5 bolts are rare and you prob. couldnt find one anyhow. As for flexplates the size depends on your bellhousing. The small bell uses a 10.5 flex with 157 teeth, the large bell uses a 11.5 flex with 164 teeth. You will need the correct flex for the bellhousing because the starter mounting is different. The starter is the same though. Also the torque converter size will matter too, there are also two mounting sizes 10.5 and 11.5.

I probally havent anwsered all of your questions. Here is a website to help you with the rest. These guys specialize in c4 and should have the anwsers and the parts you require. WWW. Performanceautomatic. com. 1-800-767-8174.

joetee10,

... thanx a lot. This is already a big chunk of what I was looking for. It appears that the C6 does not give as many questions, but that at a heavier weight. Hope to get the puzzle together so that I have one tranny, bellhousing, t-convertor, flexplate combo that fits together. As I said, not so easy unless you are willing to buy all new over there in the US and have it shipped. Remaing problem typically is the bellhousing, which is always excluded.

Thanx again !

joetee10,

... Thanx for the help. Just got two large (164) bellhousings (one which fits the tranny I have - i.e. bellhousing shares same bolts as pump - and one which uses the separate bolts which the other tranny has I am getting), the matching 164 flywheel and that piece of aluminium which goes between bell housing and engine. The puzzle is becoming more complete every day.

Thanx again !!!:-)
