I purchased my 95 f150 4x4 5 speed with autolocking hubs, last summer. The truck has 137,000 miles on it. The engine runs great but lately I have noticed a possible transmission problem. Over the summer I noticed that once or twice when the truck was cold the truck the transission seemed to jerk slightly in 4th geer. Letting off of the gas slighty then accellerating again seemed to cure the problem. This did not happen often. Yesterday we had about six inches of snow and the roads were bad. I had the truck in 4H for a while. I noticed that it seemed to jerk more in 4th gear again. After the roads were cleaned up and I was back in 2h, with unlocked hubs, the truck continued to jerk in 4th gear for a while. I have no idea if the tranny fluid has ever been flushed or changed. Any suggestions as to the possible problem or solution?
I'd look at plugs & plug wires and the EGR system for a 'jerk' in 4th gear. The plugs are working harder when the engine is under the load of 4th, and tend to miss more. The EGR could cause a similar problem it is was fritzing, and allowing too much flow. You can test EGR by plugging the hose with a golf tee. I wouldn't leave it plugged, though, as you will start to hear pinging, and possible eat more oil, and so on...
