'99 Expedition Transmission Question

Hello....been reading the fourms for a couple of hours now, but didn't see anyone else post about this problem...

When it's cold outside my trans won't shift into overdrive until the car warms up.

I don't notice it too much in the morning because I drive a lot of neighborhood streets before I hit the freeway (no sustained speeds), but on the way home I hit the freeway within 2 minutes of starting the car.

It seems to shift (although the more I watch the more I think it is shifting late <- could be wrong don't quote me on that) through the gears just fine, it just won't make that last shift into OD.

However...after a couple of minutes on the freeway it'll drop into OD and operate normally after that.

I had the dealer look at it...but it was too warm outside for it to happen...even after sitting all night.

I have a 99 Expedition 4x4 with towing package and about 70K miles.

Although I have never towed anything with it, yet, I cannot attest to what the previous owner did. It had 30K on it when I bought it.

I'd like some ideas as to what might be happening...to hopefully point the dealer in the right direction...Before the warranty runs out.

Thanks,
- TK

It won't shift into overdrive until it warms up because it is programmed that way. It's done to warm the engine faster, which makes the heater work quicker, warming you up faster.

The dealer can't do anything to change this.

'99 Expedition Transmission Question

Mark,

Thanks for the reply.

I looked in the owners manual (at least the version I can get on-line) and it doesn't say anything about this "feature".

Is there anywhere that this "feature" is documented?

Thanks

He is right. Jeeps also use this feature. The OD gear won't be accessible to the transmission until the engine coolant temperature reaches a certain point. It's normal...don't worry about it.
