05 Navigator Problem
Hi all, last Thursday my check engine light came on and I noticed my truck was idling little rough. So Saturday, I took it to the dealership and they said it was a code 442 which indicates a loose gas cap or a vacuum leak. The mechanic also asked if I leave the vehicle running while fueling (in which I plead guilty). Anyway after a slap on the hand and paying for a half hour in labor, he reset the computer and the cam (?), surprisingly Big Ella ran like new again. Until this morning, I started her up and the check engine light popped on again! What should I do? Will this continue to happen until the air gets out of the system? I really don't want to go back to the dealership for another raping!!!

There's no "air in the system". Perhaps your gas cap isn't sealing properly and needs to be replaced. The reason you aren't supposed to run the engine with the cap off is because the gas tank gets pressurized as part of the emissions control systems.
You can reset the computer yourself by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes, or go to a place like Autozone and have them scan for codes and reset it for free.

Don't mean to hijack, but when I'm on my long 1,000 mile plus trips on in the 04, I really don't ever shut the engine off that entire day, including for refueling. Is there any damage that can be done by this? I rarely take it to the point of kicking the pump, it normally gets between 3/4 and full.
