I have a 1996 f150 5.0 5spd, heres the problem. Truck will run fine for awhile then all of a sudden it will start missing and shuddering and black smoke comes out the tailpipe. Then after awile it will clear up. I have replaced spark plugs, wires and fuel filter cap and rotor are about 5 months old. Any ideas?
Having the same problem with my F-350/460. I have replaced wires, cap, rotor, plugs, fuel filter, coil, TPS (throttle position sensor), checked all vacuum lines, no apparent leaks. Still having a steady missing problem and lack of power. Will be replacing O2 sensor next and possibly removing the catalytic converter. This is my daily driver and I'm afraid that I'm going to trash my truck if I keep driving it this way. I am not sure what else to do myself. If anyone has any other ideas please give us a shout.
Since yours is a 96, might take it by someplace that can pull the codes on it. Autozone will usually do it for free and give you a print out you could take to a shop.

Codes Man Pull the codes! Like LynnL Said - take it to autozone and have them scan it.
Just as advice you can buy the OBDII scanner for as little as 60 bucks from advanced auto or the 'zone. It will be better than having to wait in line for one of the counter guys to have time to come pull a code out of your computer. I would pull the plugs and see which cylinder is running rich, i.e. carboned plug. If all the plugs are black rather than a golden brown, then you may check fuel pressure at the rail to see what you come up with next.
I know I've replaced around 50 or so EGR valves on ford trucks, usually get gummed up. It will cause a driveability issue, but not usually too much fuel.
Might check all of your wiring, a dead short to the comp. from the temp sensor will make the comp. thinks its about 0 degrees if I'm remembering it correctly.
Your MAS could be funky also, that can make it go crazy also.
I'll check ALLDaTa on Monday and shoot another post on here if you haven't got it solved by then.
