My First Truck

Just thought I would introduce myself and my truck to the forums.
2000 Ford F250 XLT Super DUty
SuperStroke Diesel V8

She has a couple of issues. First issue is the steering. When she's fully stopped I can hardly turn the wheels, I checked the power steering fluid and its fine, But I can hear a faint "whiney" noise you hear from the power sterring when I'm driving along and steering. So I suspect the power sterring pump may be on it's way out.

The only other issue is the batteries are just about dead in the mornings or after a few short runs a day. If i don't let her run for 10-20 minutes after each short trip she won't start. Now to me, that doesn't seem right.I know with small cars you can go on endless short runs and not worry about draining the battery. Does anyone know what readings I should be getting from each battery when she's running idle ? I just don't know whats at fault, the alternator, 1, or 2 batteries

Welcome to FTE, nice truck. You might want to flush the P.S. pump with syn. ATF fluid, 10-15 min. job. My P.S. pump started to whine then I flushed it now its good as new. On the batteries its good to replace both not just one.

Welcome to FTE. Glenn is right on the money with the power steering pump. Do a system flush and use syn trans fluid.
Here is a great link with pics to show you how to do it:

Here is a thread on the battery issues you may be having:

A diesel takes alot more power from the batteries to get started. Good batteries are essential to starting your truck especially in the cold mornings. Oh and welcome to FTE you will learn lots of useful information on here and we will have you spending money in no time on MODS.

Welcome to FTE.

Truck looks nice. We can also help you spend a lot of money on it.

Like already said, make sure you have ATF in your power steering pump. Some people don't know this and put power steering fluid in the pump and that is a cause of the noise.

The batts should have 12v. You should have 14v while it is running. You need 10.5v while cranking for the injectors to fire.

Welcome to FTE,

Only thing I can add is make sure the battery terminals are squeaky clean. I check them every time I open the hood.

Nice looking rig. Treat her right and she will treat you right.

Nice rig! You will want to get your batteries [b]and[/i]alternator tested. Sounds like the alt. is having a hard time keeping them charged up. Definitely replace the batts in pairs, or the old one will drag the new one down. Do you know if the truck has any mods? Welcome to the forum, lots of helpful folks in here.

Before you spend the money on batteries, make sure the terminals are clean and tight. If you're lucky, it might save you $200.

Well, I just got my power steering pump in today. I ordered it last week because I thought thats what the problem is. So I hope that fixes it.

As for batteries, I just got off the phone and I'm looking at $205 + tax for each battery. 850cca Acdelco.
Pretty expensive batteries
I think I'll check the voltages again and maybe clean the terminals. But she's been doing this for quite some time and I know one battery was replaced before I bought her, so maybe the other battery is bad now and in effect both of them are bad.

As for mods, she has nothing done to her. I tried browsing around the forums but coulnd't find any, But I'm open to suggestions

Go to autozone or Walmart and get their version of the batteries. They are less than $100 each. If you want to do some reading about mods and maintenance, click here
Oh and Welcome to the Forums. You will love it here if you put some time in reading. BTW, it's a Powerstroke, not a Superstroke.

Ouch... batts are expensive in Canada!
As for mods- a good intake and exhaust are a good place to start. 4" single exhaust of your choice (lots of options). For intake, the cheap and easy way is the 6637 mod. There are also more expensive options that work great like the Ford AIS or the AFE Stage 2. The 6637 mod is a DIY (do it yourself) version of a Tymar intake, which is another good option. As you poke around, you'll find lots of info on these basic mods. A good set of gauges is next- trans temp, pyro (exhaust temp) and boost are the most common. Even though you are in Canada, when you get ready to buy give Clay (Riffraff Performance) a shout- his pricing is very reasonable.

Well the good news is I found a couple of Napa batteries for $100/each at 860cca.
Does anyone have a link or picture to show what wires to test for voltages on the alternator and what numbers I should see when she's running at idle ?
I assume I should be getting 14.5V from the altenator and the batteries when she's running.
I'd like to test everything again with a voltmeter and see if I'm getting the proper voltages.
Also I'm going to check the wires to see if there's anything touching ground as I saw in this post. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...-problems.html

Good luck with new truck, your gonna love it. Like the guys said above, but being so new to diesels, ask plenty of question on here before you do things to it, something as simple as changing the brake fluid with brake fluid is a no-no, I did it.. Welcome to FTE.
