I was going to change tranny fluid on my 2005 SD and do not know if the convertor has a drain plug. I have the Motorcraft SP fluid and the paper filter. I have 39,000 and now problems with truck 4x4 V10 4.30s
To flush the tranny you need a heated flush and the filter is external. The internal filter is a pretty coarse filter and I've heard of upgrades to the 09 filter which is suppost to be a better inernal filter
I just drained fluid 8 qts. changed fliter & refilled. In filter housing some braass and silver dust in housing filter element is black is this what other owners have found also?
I'll be taking my '06 F-350 in for the 30,000 mile service next month. Part of that will be to change the transmission fluid. I'm sure the service writer will try to sell me some extra added service - exactly what do I need? Drain and refill?

A little brass and silver dust in the pan is normal and do not let any mechanic play the "metal shavings in pan, you need major trans repairs" BS game with you. The darkened filter element is telling you the filter is doing its job. What did the old fluid look like? Do you tow regularly? If you do, you might want to switch to a heavy service maintenance schedule. If not present, the addition of a trans cooler is always beneficial.

I believe the best is a heated flush without using any chemicals. Make sure they use MERCON SP fluid.

All 6.0L trucks came from the factory with a trans cooler in the radiator and the largest air to oil trans cooler you've ever seen on a light truck. You do not need any more trans cooling.

Amen to that!!
I had one of those put on as part of my accident and my trans hasn't complained once about the heat...
Just change the external filter. You ain't going to get all 18 quarts to pump out the cooler pipe unless its hot going in so, sounds like its an 8 quart change and then another in short time. 25% will still be old fluid without a heated flush.
