Got my Tekonsha P3 brake controller today, also ordered the Ford plug in harness. I pulled the plastic access panel to look for the factory plug socket but could not find it. There were four wires ( red, white, blue, and black )hanging loose in the area I thought the plug socket would be. My Ex has the seven blade plug at the bumper so I went on the assumption that it had the harness socket up front. Am I missing something or are these four wires probably the ones I need to use? Is there a way to test these wires to see if they are the correct ones? Thanks for the help.
The stock harness is not always in the same place and it can be difficult to find. Once you have pulled the lower dash panel off (the fuse cover panel), look under the radio and you will see some triangular supports. Feel on the other side of the supports for the harness, it may be taped or pinned down.
You can test really easily. One of the wires will have 12v with the key on and another will have 12v only when you press the brake pedal. It should be plenty to trip a test light.
it's a pain in the butt to find and difficult to get the connectors together while your hand is fitted through that small triangle shaped hole. i had to use a flash light to find the connector and then using a one hand to make the connection. i still don't know why they ( ford ) put the connector there?
I think that may be the case as I looked more this morning I see holes where I think a controller was mounted. Have to get the tester out and do more checking.
I've been out of town for a few days and just getting back to the brake controller. Found the factory plug for the harness easy enough now that I know what I'm looking for. What through me off the first time was the fact that the prior owner did not unplug his harness instead just cut the wires about 16 inches away from the plug and taped the ends. Then the ends were wraped around another wiring harness and held with tape leading me to believe they were part of that harness. Now i just need to unplug the old and plug in mine and mount the controller. Thanks for all the answers and the pictures. While I had my head under the dash I looked for the numbers for my keyless entry but could not see them.
