? about generator

I took the generator off last night and it is enormous. Am I going to have to get a bracket made to fit a altenator on the 289, seeing that altenators are much smaller. Thought someone could point me somewhere. THanks

Seems like there were 289s (I think) as well as 302s with alternators from the factory, so the junkyard would be one place to check. I would think a lot of vendors, perhaps even NAPA would sell replacements. Question is, does the alt bracket bolt on the block in the same holes as the gen bracket? Someone on here likely will know!

Yes, that's correct later 289, 351W and 302s did have alternators, and the brackets on them should work. Problem is that the stock alternators on those usually needed that danged external voltage regulator. And in this case he'd be better off if he's going through the expense of converting to go "one wire." There's a link that tells you how to install GM one wire alternators on the Fords (so he could get a new or rebuilt GM alternator at NAPA). Here's that link:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/article/...ord_Truck.html

I'm not sure if I left the link to "Tuff Stuff" (great folks - I have one)for the alternators or not so here it is again:

Products :: Tuff Stuff Performance

Also there is a company out there called C.R.A.P. (seriously) that makes all kinds of cool weird little things including conversion brackets for alternators. Here is there link:

http://www-link.com/cgi-bin/odbic***...?clientno=1681

You might also look on e-bay. There are folks that sell that kind of conversion stuff as well.

Thanks again for the info. I am trying to get as much of this planned out as I can(talking about restoration). That makes me think also, if I have the length taken out of the f3 frame to convert it into a f1, where can I find a drive shaft, because mine will be to long I would think...Maybe some one has done this kind of thing.

You can have a drive shaft shortened, or a new one made for that matter. You've probably got a shop in town that does it. Youcan either look in the phone book, or call around to the tranny shops - they'll know where to send you.

In that scope - planning - are you planning on keeping the stock rear end (and probably being speed limited to 45mph) or are you going to replace it with an update like a 9 inch????? Keeping the stock tranny? You get the picture!

I want it to have what it needs to go, meaning I am not wanting it to drag race, but I don't want to be passed by mopeds either...no offense to moped drivers...I am not sure what is in it now, if it was changed when the automatic transmission was put in or if it is original..I have bassically ask alot of questions not even knowing what I am talking about, but hopefully I can get up to speed If I don't get on everybodys nerves...The best way to learn is to ask.

The main reason I don't know what changes have been made to it is because the man who owned passed away. He left it to my father, and dad was going to sell it. My brother and I loved the look of it and thought it would be fun to do together, so here I am with all these questions. So It may take a minute for me to catch on with some of these things...all that said I have already learned alot from the advice...thanks

Long story short, you can always have a drive shaft made or shortened if you need to. If it has an automatic in it already I would think you are good to go just shorten it with the frame mod, and have it rebalanced (they do all that stuff at the shop). The tranny is probably a C4. You may have a 9" rear in it already because it sounds like the drive train has been resto'ed once already.

If you aren't sure what's in it. Take pictures and post them here. We always have fun looking and identifying parts. I'll bet the guys could tell you tons about your truck just from that!

Don't feel bad about posting pictures here. It's easier to swap out the rear end in the truck. There is a very good step by step guide that Bob Jones put together up in the "Read This First" section of the forum. That will probably help out quite a bit.

I hear witch doctors help too.
