Unhappy HPOP failed

Hey guys, I'm sure you've heard this before but I couldn't find anything about the High Pressure Oil Pump.

I have a 2003 F350 Duallie with Volant intake, Edge with attitude, and straight piped exhaust. My HPOP went out and its a pretty expensive part. I'm wondering if anyone knows why these go bad and if it was caused by my chip? I'm relatively new to the diesel world but I wouldn't go back for anything.

Is there somewhere I can get a reman? Or a kit to do it myself? I'm quite capable of doing the work but I'm in college and don't have much money for the parts.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Nick

If you have an international dealer near you you can get the pump from them for considerably less than you can through the Fod dealer. the part number for the HPOP on my 04 is 5010106R92 and I believe it should be the same for yours...just a thought

Welcome to FTE big_coyote_hunter.

The International part numbers I have for the 2003 and 2004 HPOP are:
International part # 5010106R93
Ford part # 3C3Z-9A543-AARM
or
International part # 5010119R92
Ford part # 4C3Z-9A543-AARM

jamie7375's suggestion to go to an International Dealership is a good one. However, his number does not show up on my list, but I believe mine are correct. I am not completely sure why there are two numbers but I believe the second one to be more recent. Perhaps one of them is a kit instead of the individual pump. Unless someone posts here, you should ask about this question where ever you end up buying the pump at.

You can also contact FTEPartsguy (a site sponsor) - he is a big help and has good prices. Being new, I believe you can only send him a visitors message.

What makes these fail?

Is it in the oil pan?

It's under the turbo, Mechanical pump driven by a gear probably failed due to wear like anything else.

Here is an informative video site that I stumbled across that may help answer your question (as well as others). In particular on your HPOP question, Part 4 may help explain why it fails and the location.

Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Thanks everyone for your help. There is an international dealer just up the road. I'll swing in in the morning and see what they can do.

Jackles... That video was very helpful actually. He said bad oil can cause it to fail. It just so happens that my injector seals were fried and raw fuel was leaking past and into the oil. So I'm asuming that by not changing the oil immediately I brought this on myself.

Moral of the story: Keep up with your maintanance. OR ELSE...

Too bad it didn't happen a month or so from now. There's a new aftermarket HPOP in the works.

Your numbers (Ford and International) are right and are for the pump. 3C3Z is for '03 and early '04 while 4C3Z is for late '04.

The International dealership said that the HPOP was a restricted part and they couldn't sell one to me. That I'd have to get it through Ford. They weren't for sure tho.

Riggz... Do you have info on that a/m HPOP? I could wait for it if its gonna be worth it.
