however, I have also found it to be different on another site which escapes me now (stated June '66)
the 240 cid is considered the small 6? how can you tell the difference between the 240 and the 300 from just looking at it?
I was pretty sure my truck had a big 6, sure has a lot of power
smokes a lot on start up; was told these engines don't have valve seals and therefore they smoke until warmed up and the valves seal - is this just a line or is it true?
C is the trans...3 speed L/Duty
09 is the rear axle ratio...3.70 non locking rear end
the max gvw is the trucks max load rating in pounds
the cert. net hp is the engines rating at the specified rpm
B1...are you sure its not an 81 ??? Thats Ford of Canada...which fits since its a Cdn truck...
the sequential build number(865205) is a May 66 build date
L is Dark Green
- cs65
PO must have gone with the original colour then as it is dark green now, although a metallic green which I don't think they would have had back then
the ownership listed yellow
any idea what BODY 381 means? interior colours?
thanks
It's B1 not 81.
PO must have gone with the original colour then as it is dark green now, although a metallic green which I don't think they would have had back then.
Metallic colors have been available since the 1940's.
the ownership listed yellow
L is not the COLOR code for Yellow. There were two Yellows in 1966: Code G = Chrome Yellow // Code 8 = Springtime Yellow.
any idea what BODY 381 means? interior colours?
COLOR code L: Holly Green aka Dark Green.
B1 = Ford Motor Company of Canada, Central District Sales Zone Office, where the original selling dealer ordered the truck from.
Whoever gave you that no valve seal crap is FOS!
C5AZ6571D .. Valve Seal-Umbrella Type-Intake & Exhaust // Fits: 1965/74 240 I-6 / Fits: 1965/76 300 I-6.
thanks very much for the incredibly detailed response, I thought the valve seal thing was far fetched but then I thought what do I know?! I have only ever taken apart BMW's and Volvo's from the mid 60's to early 70's, and Fords are completely foreign to me
I only stated the OWNERSHIP said yellow, not that the colour code meant yellow, just thinking out loud I guess, that the PO, or PO's, changed the colour to yellow (and ownership details) and then painted it green again; in Ontario the colour HAS to be correct on the ownership; I know, I have been pulled over twice for owning cars with the wrong colour on the ownership; having driven one for years without noticing; ah, youth!
learned something about metallic colours though, thought they were not commonly used until much later; so does Holly (Dark) Green mean it was metallic? any way to determine that it was metallic versus solid?
interior has changed; it is black vinyl now
the gauges in my truck also seem to be different from most '66's I see, mine has the large round and 2 smaller flanking round gauges, whereas most I have seen have a more horizontal look to them
looking forward to getting more acquainted with this beast
removed the rear brakes to replace a brake line and adjust the e-brake, both work okay now, still a little weak compared to the instant lock-up at the front when braking
a little hop in the back happens and the right wheel comes off the ground and spins, probably because there is no weight in the back, maybe the rear needs to be adjusted some more
new rear shocks going on this week and rear frame getting cleaned and painted next week; also need to sort out why the driver front fender is loose near the door but all the allen bolts on the fender are painted over and round off when any pressure is applied, still soaking with rust ease
just need to sort out the wiring and get it safetied
The original 1966 Ford color chip chart I have...has the actual colored chips glued to it, so it's EZ to see what the color is.
Your truck has had several changes from the original.
You have a Standard Cab which would not have come with the Custom Cab's anodized aluminum grille. Standard Cabs came with a painted steel grille.
The pic of your trucks interior is kinda dark, so it's difficult for my 64 year old eyes to make out, but it appears your dash cluster isn't original.
Standard Cabs came with a cluster like yours, but it was painted white.
The gauges flanking the speedometer were optional on all models that used the painted & chromed versions of this cluster.
The two gauges: Oil and Amp.
