C6 shuddering, no 2-3 shift
C6 shuddering, no 2-3 shift
I just rebuilt a C6 in an 88 E150. It shifts 1-2, but it will not shift into third gear. It shudders really bad in reverse. I'm thinking that it might be the intermediate band adjustment or the reverse-high clutch. The rev-high clutch is the only one that is engaged in both reverse and third gear, if I'm thinking right. Or could it be the servo, governor, valve body or modulator valve?
C6 shuddering, no 2-3 shift
I am having a similar prblem wth the C6 in my 77 f-150 w/400. only difference is that mine will shft into 3rd but when it gets warm the the shift is extemly, extemly, extemly delayed. i was hoping it was something simple nobody seemed to know what to do. I hope someone can shed some light on the subject.
Please let me know if you figure it out.

I assume both of you have checked the fluid level and confirmed the vacuum line is attached to the modulator as well as manifold vacuum.
If so, one possibility is leaky seal rings on the front clutch (used for 3rd and Rev) - either the cast iron seal rings on the stator support, or the rings on the apply piston within the drum.
You could check main pressure with a pressure gauge in the various ranges
I would pull the pan to inspect for clutch material (the sediment) and also check the filter. If you see clutch material, it's definately time to tear into it...
PS - Brian, the intermediate band (and the servo that actuates it) is used only for 2nd gear. I can't see how the governor could affect reverse, it controls the shift timing of the upshifts (and RARELY gives trouble). The valve body and/or modulator valve could give this trouble, but "shuddering" probably damaged the clutch plates.

I got it fixed. It was the valve body. Someone recommended a Transco SK6 shift improver kit. It was worth every bit of the $17. I rebuilt the whole trans earlier, so I just took out the valve body and replaced all the springs, et cetera.
