I have a '79 Bronco, 351M, and C6 auto. Lately when I'm at very low speeds or sitting at a stop with the truck in gear and foot on the brake I'm getting a 'shudder' feeling from under the truck. There are a few parts that I know vibrate on my truck but this is different. Also, if I throw the trans into nuetral or park the 'shudder' seems to stop. Can anybody take a guess as to possible scenarios that may be going on here? I'm not sure what elements are engaged in the C6 with the trans in 'D' and foot on brake. The band, certain clutches, valve positioning? Also, I did add a small amount of trans fluid a while back. Could I have overfilled and caused shudder?
Otherwise, the fluid is nice and red, smells fine, and the trans shifts crisply all the way up and down though the gears.
I had an 80 bronco that did the same thing. As dumb as it sounds ,I must have bumped my 4 wheel shifter and it was in enough to shudder but not enough to engauge or make the light come on. As far as it stopping in neutral or park, you are removing the load from the drive train ,which would make any loose thing under the truck stop viberating.Check for loose exhaust parts, schrouds, and tranny mounts and bushings. Good luck Mush
Well, I have been in and out of 4-wheel a couple times lately. So I guess I can shift the transfer case back and forth to see if that changes anything. Also I agree that taking the trans out of gear removes the torque from the powertrain. That's why I was leaning towards the 'shudder' coming form the trans. I was thinking that any other general rattles and vibrations would be pretty much the same in gear or out of gear. Although, I guess RPM changes and ohter things change a bit when in gear with load on the system. Well, I'll take a look for any loose stuff and see what I can find. Thanks for the input Mush....
I have a C4 that does the same thing. It seems to be hunting back and forth between gears creating the shudder feel. Unfortunaely I have not fixed it yet. I am suspecting a governor problem. The governor is accessable with the tranny in the vehicle. I plan the just rebuild the thing anyway since it leaks like crazy.
